I just watched the Roger Gracie escape vid in the other thread and I noticed several times that he escaped a triangle.
It appears that he steps over his opponent somehow and relieves the choke?
Can anyone offer some additional insight into this escape? Why don’t we see this more often? Is it because a lot of fighters also trap the leg when the fighter stands up?
Just curious as to how exactly the escape works and how difficult it is to perform?
Thanks.
TTT for some of the guys who train to offer some insight....
I haven't seen the other video but are you talking about "stacking" to escape the triangle?
Very effective, however I only use it as a "late" escape. Margarida shows a version on his instructional Margarida 101.
I have used it in competition several times, and it has never let me down.
First, hide your trapped arm, however you prefer, I grab the opponents knee with my outside arm and frame with my trapped arm. I believe Margarida wraps it around his opponents leg.
Second, get your opponents hips off the ground and set them on your quads. This takes away their ability to break down your posture.
Third, on your non-trapped side, straighten your leg and put your foot in your opponents arm pit, now do the same on the other side.
Once your feet are in his armpits, push under his arms and straighten your back to break his legs open, his legs cant handle the strength of your back.
Sit up and pass!
I believe Roger stands and throws his legs across his opponents torso. (Crosses his legs in front of his opponent)
Either way, Both are effective!
Hope this helps!
I like threads about triangle defense.
Good luck!
when I get caught in a triangle, I always put my leg on my opponent and sit...that way, he can not put the move effectively....but sometimes it does not work.
which leg jujubre?
always my right leg....I don't know why.
Huh...So just get a leg on and work from there, good stuff thanks. I had never seen that variation until I watched the Roger HL pretty cool gonna give it some work...
Good thread although I haven't seen the video.
ps : I just read the MarkBJJ explanation...
I don't do it exacly like that...
I don't put my leg on his armpit. I directly put my leg in his stomach (like if this leg was in the lotus position : you have to be somewhat flexible)....
sometimes, if I am in a good position I also put my second leg crossed over the first one (directly in the lotus position over his stomach) and after that I let my body fall in my back while trying to release the pressure of his triangle....(sometimes it does not work)

Good post MarkBjj, thats exactly the kind of insight I was looking for.
Jujubre, are you saying you actually stand on his stomach or just stretch your leg across it and then arch backwards?
Here's another defense. Its not the same you're talking about but I've used it and it works great. another "oh crap i'm caught" kind of escape.

The triangle and escape sequence starts at 2:20 of this video.
I remember seeing a triangle escape a while back that was similar but ended up in breaking the triangle and getting a knee bar.
A few details that are important in that escape are;
Be sure to use you non-trapped arm to push on the opponents chest in order to raise your head right away. You crossed arm is too trapped at this point to do anything. I continue by standing and throwing my leg (that's on side of my outside arm) over the opponent's torso, sitting back and crosses my ankles over his torso.
At this point keep your trapped arm protected from any triangle position armlocks as you push his legs off of your head and work out of the triangle. You will end up in a neutral position and will need to scramble from there.
Another Detail is that I only use this escape as a last effort. If my trapped arm is not fully pushed across the opponents torso - which would seal the triangle - I do a few others which don't require me to feel much choking pressure on my neck.
Hope this helps.
Jeff, can you show and/or explain some of the other triangle escapes you like?
