Tyron Woodley believes the UFC pushes fighters too quickly and Sage Northcutt and Paige VanZant are the perfect examples.

The UFC often signs young, up-and-coming prospects but the problem with them fighting in the UFC so young is the fact they are fighting the best in the world, which is a problem according to Woodley. Along with that, the promotion has to carefully matchmake them which they didn’t do to
“They (UFC) force feed. What happened when you forced Sage Northcutt on us? … No shade, that’s my homie, but they pressed him too quick. He wasn’t ready. I was his training,” Woodley said on The Residency Podcast (via MMANews). “He would’ve been great, he could’ve been a champion. He gave me many, many ass-whoopings in the gym. But then he couldn’t take when somebody went to submit him. He couldn’t take pressure. If he couldn’t get right up, it would frustrate him. That was the thing that me and my coach wanted to work with him on. Because he was so young. both Northcutt and VanZant as both struggled and ultimately left the UFC.

“So, Sage, Paige VanZant, all these people they wanted us to be like, ‘This is the person,’ but they gotta still win,” Woodley added. “What happens when you fk around and you blow somebody up to ‘this is the person’ and they lose, to Charlie Oliveira. You may want Gaethje there because he doesn’t give a fk and just says crazy shit, but he may not be able to f**k with Charlie Oliveira. The sport is the sport.”

Definitely the case with Sage. He was in the UFC something like 18 months after his first fight at only 18-19 years old. His manager and trainer should have kept him on the regional scene a few years to build experience.

Lowest IQ of any fighter in the history of the sport.

Tyrone is correct but Sage got hurt way worse in one fc.

Btw Woodley’s honesty is refreshing, admitting Sage getting the better of him in the gym

The UFC isn’t supposed to be some kind of developmental league, it’s supposed to be the world series of MMA. If those two weren’t happy with their development, it wasn’t the UFC’s fault.

Leave it to Tyrone to start playing the blame game. Anyone except themself.

They put Sage against that kickboxing power striker who had a lot more experience and he crushed Sage’s facial bones. This was after Sage left UFC. That guy one punched his face into bolivian.

Paige just wasn’t that good and didn’t have much of a future in fighting.

Look at this shit! Sage should have been in King of the Cage or the equivalent.

This fight is exactly what I was talking about. It’s not Dana’s fault that Sage went over to China and fought an elite striker 10x his size. Sage has stupid management, end of story. Looks like his dad got overexcited about his kid and signed him up for some fights that were above his pay grade.

Yeah if anything ONE “Pressed” him waaaay more lol

Meh, they wouldn’t have done shit regardless but I don’t necessary disagree.

Damn it, Tyrone. I never looked at it that way!
