Hey folks,
I take a lot of notes on matches and do a lot of video study, so I figured I would try my hand at doing a breakdown of the smash/stack pass as performed in a couple of classic matches. Rigan Machado vs Roleta and Wallid Ismael vs Roleta. I'm interested in improving for future breakdowns, so please let me know if you see anything I could do better, or if there are things you like to see in breakdowns.
Enjoy!

Nice breakdown. Thoughts on Roleta pulling guard from too far away as his mistake that was capitalized on? Playing any guard without being able to control the opponents hips is a struggle for me. Had he made the attempt to engage more from the feet or establish a sleeve grip do you think things would have played out different?

Hi Josh, I believe we were training partners at a Henry Aikens seminar last year, good to see your name. I like what you are doing. Good anaysis on a topic near and dear to me. As for possible improvements...I would like bigger images where the you are using gifs. Maybe that is just the way gifs are; I don't know. It would also be cool it you could comment over the video as it plays and use some basic illustations. The BJJScout vidoes on YouTube do a decent job with illustrations, nothing fancy, but it works. They use text to make their points which is okay but to understand the info you have to pause their videos quite a bit, which is okay but a bit of work. If you want people to pay for your info my main suggestion would be to step up the production values. Also, try not to say "um." Keep up the good work!

Could be, though if he was closer he might risk an incomplete pull (machado blocking and being on top of half guard), hard to say!

I need to rewatch and mull that part over some more! What are your thoughts?

That was my brother you worked with at the seminar :) He mentioned it to me as we are both fans of your passing the guard book with Tim cartmell!
Thanks a million for the feedback. That's exactly what I was looking for! I've been trying to get better with the "umm's" but I did it a ton in these audio clips. I'll see if there is a way to make bigger gifs.

In. This pass is what I do 95% of the time.
Phuckles - In. This pass is what I do 95% of the time.Nice! Let me know what you think! I use this pass a lot too and wish I had taken the time to really study it in depth before.
Josh Vogel -That pass and game Machado uses is pretty much exactly my game. Even keeping the guy from re-gaurding. Holy shit I feel about a million times better about my game now. I feel like I never see high level guys using side control so to see Machado do it really makes me feel good. That is pretty much my game right there. Stack to side control. Maintain side and then sub. Vtfu.Phuckles - In. This pass is what I do 95% of the time.Nice! Let me know what you think! Phuckles -Nice! Agreed, Machado's side control pressure, head position and weight placement is awesome in this match. It's so hard to pin guys like Roleta with insane guards and that body type! My next project is to break down the side control in this match and other matches where people successfully pin from there against high level guard games.Josh Vogel -That pass and game Machado uses is pretty much exactly my game.
