This is an article by the Wash Times written about UFC. On the surface it's a pro-UFC article that MMA fans should be happy to read. Our sport is attracting the young viewers, boxing sucks, MMA is the sport of the future, blah blah blah. We've all known this for years, so it's cool to see mainstream media 'getting it'.
What's BS is that the Wash Times did ZERO research and just reprinted whatever UFC PR people told them.
The article stated that there were no rules before Zuffa, there were no weight classes, there was no Randy Couture, there were only 'bar room brawlers', there was no athletic commission sanctioning, there were no rounds, and there were no world-class athletes. All of this is complete nonsense.
At least give SEG a little credit and do some research before printing an article.
i believe what was being made mention of was the time period when mccain was complaining about how brutal it was. which would make what zuffa said correct.
While you are correct that the facts stated in the article are not absilutely correct, and that the Wash Times did a poor job of research, I don't think this is a bad thing.
Most people think the UFC has no rules. Much of this was the result of the marketing from the first few UFC's. When rules and weight classes were implemented, the sport had already been blacklisted and most people never new about the rules.
Yes, Dana is incorrect when he states that it was Zuffa that brought rules and world class athletes to the sport. However, by making these statements, it is a much more powerful message and helps the general public accept the "new" version of the UFC. It's called stretching the truth for marketing purposes.
You guys must think Zuffa brought in Couture, Belfort, both Shamrocks, Royce, Kevin Jackson, Tank (bar room brawler), Tito, Severn, Coleman, and Mo Smith. WRONG!
Zuffa was NOT the first to get sanctioning, not the first to implement modern rules, rounds, or weight classes.
But don't let facts get in the way of Zuffa fanboy worship. I guess you should just get your MMA news from UFC.com
