what does K1 level striking even mean anymore

mma fighter wins HW GP

MW mma fighter beats HW champ

Both Mousasi and Overeem can be considered kickboxers. It's not either of those guys are pure MMA guys.

*Double post

why are they considered kickboxers? because they are good at it? the point is that they fought at the highest level at mma for years, crossed over to K1, fought guys who ONLY do K1 and kicked their arses

It means that if you are Dutch, started out as a kickboxer and train day to day with top level K-1 fighters, see Overeem and Mousasi, that you can probably transition quite well.

Overeem started as a kickboxer and had kickboxing fights way before MMA fights, same with Mousasi.

yeah, but at the end of the day, these guys are mma fighters fighting k1....other mma fighters have also done well in k1, even with grappling bases like rampage, kid and kawajiri

goku - why are they considered kickboxers?

Why is Nog a BJJ guy?

Why is Hughes considered a wrestler?

goku - MW mma fighter beats HW champ

Looks like a huge statement is true technically but at the same time:

- They nearly looked the same size

- Moussasi is not just an "mma fighter"

- The HW champ in K1 does not mean Kyotaro is the best K1 HW (as you obviously know being that Kyotaro just lost in the GP weeks ago)

- And as you obviously know that Kyotaro just lost in the GP weeks ago), he was likely not 100% for this fight

All that said, its still an awesome win for Moussasi but its not nearly as end of the world as you want it to seem.

No. Both Overeem and Mousasi started out as kickboxers.

btw, watching it now, kyotaro looks horrible, very sloppy and plodding footwork and balance...

what gives?

Kyotaro is def bigger/thicker but not sure if it looks like a MW vs HW

A mw that's fought mma at LHW and hw. Ok. Fuckin trolls. Moose is a kickboxer. Phone Post

But why is he considered a kickboxer?

Just because that his base art and thats what he started in?

Other than that? Why is he considered one? Why?

The threadstarter should ask Aoki what K-1 level striking means.

Goku?

It's not that unusual for mma guys do win K-1 fights. I've seen Kawajiri, Rampage and Kid fuck people up in K-1 before. Even Genki Sudo was reasonably successful in his K-1 stint.

It just depends on the fighter imo.

I believe the statement holds more validity nowadays than when the term was first coined. Back then say for instance when Mirko busted in on the scene he was bound to take your head off standing but on the ground meh. Now if you say that the other guy is usually in trouble cause the TD defense and scramble is going to be there as well as sub defense.
Fuck it everything for that matter guys like CC and Hunt were V1 guinea pigs for the first wave. Now they may say a guy is K1 level striker but he just may sub you.

K1 is awesome, but the tourney def helped Overeem. Hes not the best until he beats the best(schilt)

& yes I understand Semmy started as a Pancrase fighter, but he was a 1 dimensional kickboxer.

Since when is winning ONE fight out of several considered "reasonably successful"???    And the ONE fight he won was against a fake tkd gold medalist.  Same goes for Kid whose lone K-1 win cam against a pro wrestler.   Kawajiri's one win came against an over the hill 36 year old Takeda.

what gives?

He went 3 rounds with Semmy Schilt a few weeks ago.
