Royler lives in San Diego NOW! He was just here at my place in NC in October.
He is at Saulo's most of the time.
heart attack
crohn's disease
irritable bowel syndrome
candida
inflammatory bowel disease
sjogren's disease
interstitial cystitis
and other autoimmune diseases
then he would end up like the rest of the champions
Ari2 - probably the worst seminar I've ever attended. They guy had 0 interest...and it was his affiliate.
I went to 2 of his seminars. Both terrible. I paid good $ but he wouldnt answer my questions.
He definately held back and I always recommend to people not to attend his seminars.
I'm not in favor of juicing to win competitions, especially.
However, I am in favor of modest levels of 'roid (and hGH) use under the care of a doctor after age 50-ish (45+). By the time any of those side effects manifest you're usually dying of something else or passed away anyhow. It improves the quality of life. (not everyone is a candidate, though).
The problem is using too much, stacking incorrectly and not getting LFTs (liver tests). You also need pituitary tests (to rule out a tumor) and yearly PSA testing.
If someone is doing a sport where it would be advantageous to healing, I don't see why small amounts of cortisone and other mild healing steroids couldn't be used. But in the young, if you're going to have a side effect, or you have a pre-existing tumor, then you have a long time to live and could manifest - so it's probably not a good idea.
If you look at a list of 'high risk' drugs, Steroids can be harmful, but it's WAY down the list, under even some OTC medications. (see 'Bigger, Faster, Stronger'). Driving to your comps is probably a lot more dangerous than modest, MD supervised 'roid use.

This was exactly my issue. The seminar largely focused on self defense which I wasn't interested in...and which was quite simple and I felt could have been taught to me by my instructor instead of Royler. Moreover, he had a Q & A and refused to answer my question.
Ari-"How do I escape position x?"
Royler-"Don't get there hahaha."
Ari-"Haha, ok but when I do what should I be focusing on"
Royler-"Don't get there."
^^^ Exactly! What a load of BS cause my gym that he did the seminar is not a RG affiliate. And I am happy aboot that!
Went to two seminars - first one was pretty good, the other one was pretty bad.
We did self defense, the old school Royce Gracie foot stomp to clinch from UFC 1, and then question and answer time, where he wouldnt answer most of the questions.
Somebody in particular asked for some tips to get out of a North-South pin and all he would say was "dont get there."
I get the idea that you want to prevent getting in a bad position, and that the real problem happens a few steps beforehand, but Im pretty sure he doesnt just tap and give up if he winds up there, so he's got to have something, haha.
I kinda felt like a chump because I invited my friend because the first was really good.
On the other hand, the guys that I have rolled with who have trained with him personally are usually excellent, so I assume he's a good teacher. Maybe it was a bad week or something.

I think this is a classic case of ask a simple question get a simple answer.
I've been to about 8 Royler seminars and everytime I hear the same 3 questions like clockwork.
1) "How do I escape side control?"
2) "How do I escape the americana?"
3) "How do I escape a triangle choke?"
and everytime Royler will answer with one of the following
"Don't get there, you have no problems"
"Tap 3 times he let you go"
"Don't be late"
If you don't understand how you got put into those positions that warrent the necessity for an escape, you're not going to get your answer with a simple "Oh you need to use Escape or Technique #347! This is the answer to all your issues!"
I asked him once what issues he could see with the way I was trying to escape being mounted.
First he evaluated if I knew the Upa and the elbow escape. Then was I doing them correctly and finally how I got mounted. Working backwards I was late on my timing, which he helped with.
Again you ask a simple question, sometimes you get a simple answer.
Frankly, that sounds like a lot of apologist BS. I've been doing BJJ on and off for 8 years, it had probably been 4 when I did the Royler seminar. There wasn't time for me to pull him aside and hav a short private. If he had WANTED to answer the question, even in the manner you described, he coudl have.

I completely agree. I have been to 2 of Royler's seminars as well and they were both terrible. Both were at affiliates of his. If all he showed was some of the original Gracie self defense stuff I would have been stoked but it was mostly basic BJJ (which could have also been cool) but he didn't add any of the details that were different than what you have learned 100 times over the years and drilled to death. Now if there was even one new detail added to any of the techniques to make it work better of make it easier to set up and/or finish I would have been happy having spent the money to go but there was almost no detail at all.
And like everyone else when I asked a couple questions they were all shot down without an answer. I don't remember specifics as both seminar were 6 or 7 years ago but one had to do with getting better leverage on an arm lock and another one had to do with his opinion on drilling moves and positional sparring. I think I asked him 2 questions at each seminar and he didn't really answer any of them. He basically blew them off and moved on.
Sounds like my experience. And let me add that I didn't ask a question like "how do I escape a fully locked in triangle choke." I think it was "what shoudl I be doing when the other person has reverse kesa," which I felt then, and still feel today after much more training, was a legit question.

I think its a classic case of someone taking money while having no intention of actually providing anything of value.
Thats just crap. He isn't being bothered on the street or interrupt while training for a match. He is being paid for a seminar and its the entire point of him being there.
ha! re: the NS question. Jorge Pereira gave me some great tips!
