What makes Ben Askren special in my opinion is not whether or not he is "the best" but rather his application of his wrestling style vs modern mma fighters.
Ben Askren credentials are misunderstood I feel by many mma fans. Askren was never the most athletic wrestler or even the most talented from his era. He did always have the most unique style. His willingness to scramble his way out of any position and go for dominating wins made him special to watch apply his craft..
The fact that his athleticism quite frankly doesn't carry over that well to modern mma, that his striking isn't all that polished, but he is willing and able to apply his wrestling craft in this hostile environment is what makes him special. Rather than turning in to see him "exposed" enjoy watching a master apply their craft, perhaps his success will/can open up and expose new strategies or techniques for elite mma.

I never appreciated Askren when he was younger and did not care when Bellator cut him for being too boring. After his last fight, I have to say that older Asken is pretty exciting, getting thrown around, dropped with leg kicks, gouging for victory. I will watch his next fight for free on YouTube.
Congrats to Askren for still having the freedom to have sponsors.
