What 'No-gi'ers are missing out in in BJJ...

Also I have a dislike of playing "fancy" guards so that's one reason I don't really like training in gi. If you enjoy that though, then hey go ahead and play with it.

ugh.

this

I spend as much time in the gi as out, and I'm seriously considering not looking for gi chokes anymore. I play guitar and piano, and my hands are a friggin mess.

that said, both are fun. i'd miss one or the other if i only did one.

there are 6 year old kids that wear a gi. seriously. at what point do you let a elementary schooler out tough you?

No-gi'er, please!

Just because you roll in a gi doesn't mean you need to play using fancy guards.

Complete opposite for me in my experience, I have been at 3 different gi schools over my years, I always have more fun no gi easily

I get no extra joy tapping people with collar chokes, actually it feels cheap to me, grip fighting is also boring and guys love to hold and stall, I prefer a faster paced roll even as an older guy now, just not what I enjoy doing

no gi all day for me

I like both, but slipping around in a puddle of mingled sweat appalls me.

I wouldn't consider it a technique but definitely a skill. Comparable to base Phone Post

Roger Gracie agrees with Shen. Closed guard-sweep to mount-choke... or Pass your fancy inverted guard-mount-choke

My thought on No-gi is that it is fun, but it allows you to use strength and athleticism to win more than gi does. the Gi requires slower more intentional movements.

imho you can better exploit a strength advantage in the gi, especially if you strength advantage is grip strength

I completely disagree

IMO scrambling means moving really fast and hoping you land in a good spot. I will never rely on any type of scramble. Phone Post

Scrambling is understanding where you should go Phone Post

So you consider this a technique? Do you teach it in class?

I train with two brothers who are very big and strong and use the gi very well. One of them in particular has such strong grips, in part due to grip strength and in part due to good technique, that once he gets a grip properly, I'm sometimes stuck in that grip from the moment he sweeps me with it until the moment he has finalized the pass, or even gone to mount. I'm one of the stronger guys in my gym, weigh about the same as this guy, and can break most grips by most opponents, but his gripping is just out of this world.

Nice. I will be stealing that and using it as soon as possible.

Yes. I teach how to scramble and have guys drill live Phone Post

Don't step to real G's. G's in Gis that is.

dressing like the japanese did in the 19th century.

Exactly. I've never said scramble in a grappling context and thought chaos. I'd say controlled scramble might be more befitting, but meh, 2 words vs 1. Phone Post

I try not to ever scramble. IMO when people scramble it means "Oh shit! I'm about to be in a bad position so I better spas the fuck out faster than this other guy!"

Although you guys are obviously saying thats not what your doing, for me my goal in grappling has and will always be to still be able to play my game when I'm 65 years old. So with that requirement scrambling needs to be strayed away from. Thats just my thought process, your entitled to yours.

I friggin love the gi.  I love the callous knobs on my fingers.  I love doing the laundry.

There is just something about training in the gi that I cant get enough of.  I dont train much no gi at all.  Im not trying to be a fighter, not trying to compete in NAGA. Just want to have fun and take a traditional approach to studying the art.
