Who is the most successful LW ever?

Khabib can’t be considered with his resume, not enough fights against the top guys.

A hell of a lot of fans came to MMA around the time BJ fought Nick, so it’s understandable they don’t get it.

They’re still uneducated dickheads who should go back and watch his fights with Hughes, Sherk, Stevenson, GSP etc.

One things for sure, a prime BJ gives Khabib a tougher fight than anyone he fought

And the majority of writers polled there disagreed. In fact, the majorty of them scored it 30-27 Tibau. That is more than a little doubt in that decision.

Tibau being referenced at this point just shows who the haters are. Khabib had a close fight against a prime roided out WW with better TDD than GSP statistically and was favoured to beat a 23 year old, nowhere near prime Khabib, and Tibau did zero damage. Actually Khabib busted him open.

Everyone else has a lot of those on their records, including Jones who was involved in 3 actual robberies where he got beat the fuck up and bloodied yet still somehow won. Reyes, Gus and Santos.

Edit because I read the thread and saw this is already addressed

BJ’s career as a whole is much more impressive than Khabib.

Fought across eras. The run he had of just lw fights that went Serra/Uno/Gomi/Pulver/Stevenson/Sherk/KenFlo/Diego is incredible. Anyone who says those wins aren’t as or more impressive than Dustin and Justin doesn’t know the context imo.

Yeah he went up to ww and lost a few between there but who cares. Also he never missed weight.

Absolutely not as impressive as RDA/Conor/Justin/Dustin/Barboza/MJ

and since when are losses not counted? Man BJ fans have to do some mental gymnastics here. Just say you like him more and that’s it.

One guy is freaking .500 and the other the only 29-0 in history.

He’s not nearly as good or dominant as Khabib.

Gomi was already washed by that time.

This kind of thing is objective. It’s a tie with Khabib, BJ and whoever else matches their record. In 1.5 to 2 years it’ll almost certainly be Islam.

It’s only a tie in title defences.

In all other aspects Khabib’s record, dominance and ability as a fighter absolutely destroys BJ’s.

Thread title “who is the most successful lw ever” seems to me to indicate ww fights wouldn’t be considered.

But if we’re adding them, BJ going up and beating prime Hughes is a huge accomplishment khabib never matched.

I love MJ and Barboza, but they aren’t the kind of wins a goat run is made of.

If you think BJ’s dominance when he was on his lightweight run I question whether you were following the sport at that time.

Yeah, he took l’s late in his career. But he stuck around to take those l’s, he didn’t quit in the middle of his prime…

I don’t think khabib is wrong for leaving on top, but not sticking around affects his goat ranking

This is pretty insane. BJ might be the best boxer and best Jiu-Jitsuka in lw history. He tooled guys on the ground as well as khabib did.

Wrestling is the only facet he exceeded BJ’s skill in. Khabib is top 3 type submission grappling skill, but BJ is better

Khabib has the better record, which is unarguable, but the rest is arguable.

Prime BJ would have beat down Iaquinta, not spam failed takedowns at him for 25 minutes and fail to finish him. He would have hurt him.

Sean Sherk would have been stylistically favored against everyone Khabib beat and therefore he can be considered the best LW opponent either of them faced. BJ sparked him. (I think Khabib would have also beat Sherk, but he wouldn’t have beat him down and hurt him, which is true dominance, like BJ did.)

I do think Khabib beats BJ head to head, however.

Most of which is subjective. Like I said, the only thing we know objectively is that it’s a tie until someone surpasses the record.

I actually don’t. I like Khabib a lot. I like his top game more than BJ’s. BJ’s guard was better. BJ’s back mount was different, probably technically superior.

God damn that’s a fun fight to imagine, either way it goes

Khabib would take BJ down and destroy him just like everyone else who was allegedly more well rounded.

Maybe

BJ’s not just “more well rounded,” he’s at least as good of a grappler as Khabib
