in the early ufc's guillotines were easy chokes that people could put on the untrained participants. for a long while it was hard to catch people with them, especially with the arm in during mma matches (unless you're nickname is pequeno). so why the comeback?
finishing with arm in has been refined and taught better.

exactly, the tweaking of a classic, simple manuver makes it one of the most deadly subs in mma. but who popularized it?
joe daddy learned it from someone else, no?
also alistair is slick with it, but he doesn't really have lots of seminars that i've heard about so it's unlikely he spread the knowledge.
the french
Alexandre "Pequeno" Nogueira??
pequeno, renzo, overeem

Sorry, buy LOL @ Joe Daddy and Swick.
I don't really recall it ever going away.
Still, you don't see very many top level guys get finished by guillotine. Sylvia is the last I remember.
there was three of them on the undercard of UFC 100, all of the recipients were choked unconscious
the last big name that was submitted via guillotine was Robbie Lawler at the hands of Jake Shields last month
Renzo mostly. All of his students and his student's students can hit it with the arm in.

TF? robbie lawler, nick thompson, hermes franca; not to mention ufc undercards. also vitor (stunned), igor v, rumina sato. it's not just the renzo guys... joe daddy, the ATT guys are also good at them.
you could do a seminar on just that one submission and it's nuances and variations.
Overeem started catching people with it, he comes to mind.
belcher just caught kang with one too...i think, correct me if im wrong, that you see it alot more in mma than in bjj tournies because in bjj you can kinda relax thru alot of the match, where in a fight ur pretty much breathin heavy from the start so its a bit easier to get the tap when the other guys airs cut off after hes worn out
also i get caught in the guillotine ALL THE TIME in class but i rarely tap from it cuz i can just kinda relax n let the other guy burn his arms out just by turnin my head a bit or whatever, but i dont think i could get away with it in a fight when ur half-dead n thinkin about all the other shit goin on besides jiu-jitsu
