why did Samuel Braga push Gui Mendes?

I was watching this video of Gui, at the start Gui gets pushed. I know its dating back until 2009, but what actually happened between the two?

The Atos guys used to do a celebration where they would pretend they were swinging a sword. Gui did it after he beat Samuel in the finals and he wasn't happy about it.

I thought the Mendes trained at ATOS? Phone Post 3.0

They do. Gui did the sword thing and that's why Braga pushed him.

Funny addendum to that story: later that day, Michael Langhi (Alliance) Vs Gilbert Burns (Atos) in the final of the lightweight division.

Langhi won, then Sergio Moraes (Alliance) - at the edge of the mat - did the 'sword-swinging' motion - to which Langhi mimed getting out a machinegun, and shooting him down.

...and Braga was stripped of his silver medal for pushing Gui.

And he made an instructional this year, called 'The Original Berimbolo', in which he claims to have invented the move.

The Mendes brothers hit back saying the berimbolo isn't the sweep, but rather the scramble after the sweep, and they basically invented it (IIRC: think it was on a Rapiemag webinar they retorted...).

There's footage of Samuel as a purple belt doing the berimbolo.

Ah: but what is the berimbolo...?

"That's not the berimbolo...a totally different game."

- Rafa Mendes.

Someone here posted a video of some old school guy (Margarida?) doint the berimbolo in the 90s.

Great soundtrack to that highlight reel!

I'd probably be a little mad if a guy stalled like crazy grabbing my butt hairs and then magic Jesus sworded me at the end. Phone Post 3.0

i've seen that video too. i'm not sure what year it was from though

my instructor has told me that the "berimbolo" sweep/back take sequence was around for a long time, way before anybody claimed ownership of it.

however, people like mendes and braga can definitely take credit for developing all the variations, and taking the execution to the next level.

lol, it is a pretty douchebag celebration.  maybe it looks cooler when the mendes bros do it, but everytime i see somebody try to emulate at a local tourney, it's always some big douchebag doing it

I wonder what happened to Paqueta's video library. I bet there are a ton of things people consider new being done years ago. Phone Post 3.0

There is video of berimbolo in the 90s.

Leo Vieira doing it...

Oh that Leo match was one of my favorites, I got that on VCR somewhere. Charuto looking to the sidelines with a helpless look like is this really happening, somebody get me outta here! Leo was hitting the berimbolo as a brown belt, that on video too.

Come on guys: we all know there's a judo textbook from the 1850s with a picture of the berimbolo; give it up.

That's not what the Mendes bros define as a berimbolo.
The berimbolo is what happens after the sweep Leo does: Leo just comes to top position - whereas the Mendes bros are interested in what happens after you get their hips to the mat.

Thats a helicopter sweep not a berimbolo
