Frankie isn't getting screwed. The UFC knows they can have a huge buildup for Frankie versus Conor ESPECIALLY if MMA is legalized in NY. You don't blow that buildup on a short notice fight. They know Mendes won't sell PPV.
Imagine Edgar/McGregor headlining at MSG including a northeast media tour?! It'd be a Ireland/Boston mick vs NY/NJ ginnie grudge match for the ages!

There was nothing controversial about that first fight with Benson. The only real controversies were Penn 1 and Benson 2. And he had a draw with Maynard after nearly getting bingoed. He showed a ton of heart to survive that though.

1 fight in 2014, a decision loss to the Champion
1 fight in 2015, 1st rd tko to top 5 opponent
Frankie Edgar since 2014 to current=
3 fights=3-0
2 fights in 2014=1 of 3 to Finish BJ Penn(other two being legend WW Hughes and GSP), also dominated top 5 opponent and finished him as well
1 fight in 2015=decisive victory over Urijah Faber
Mendes has fought Aldo twice, as well as more recently, being finished once and losing a decision 2nd time.
Edgar has fought Aldo once and it was a split decision.
Mendes is a back up instead of Frankie why?

Money for one. If they legalize MMA in NY with Frankie being from NJ they could easily put him in a title fight on that card and make $$$. If they put him on this card and he loses they can't use him there.
Another is technically Chad is the #1 contender in the rankings. I don't necessarily agree with that but it is what it is. All but a few of the media sites the UFC uses have Chad and Frankie 1 and 2. It is just a matter of what order it's really pretty close.
Also Faber and BJ aren't the same quality win they would have been a while ago at FW.

Edgar doesn't need to train in hopes of Aldo pulling out, he's already in line for a title fight.

He just lost his title shot not long ago and has 2 losses to the current champ.... Frankie has one loss in a much closer fight to Aldo and has dominated 4 opponents in a row. UFC must have something against Frankie. Guy is always exciting and tough as they come. They know he would derail the Conor hype train. But either way I'm glad Aldo is still fighting
They probably see him as a more winnable fight for McGregor than Frankie.
Frankie has been gifted enough chances at the title. He got a shot coming off of two consecutive losses. I love Frankie but I don't feel bad for him.

In all reality, this could be a blessing in disguise. This way at least Frankie is guaranteed a full training camp for his next shot at the gold.
So if Aldo pulls out and McGregor fights Mendez(one of these famous wrasslers that are supposed to be his kryptonite) and puts the stamp on him, people are still going to whinge?
"Sure he beat Mendez, but until he beats Frankie I'm not convinced."
Just be thankful there's a backup plan for if Aldo can't fight FFS.

Frankie has finished 2/3 of his last 3 opponents. Despite it being a past his prime BJ, the only two people who have finished BJ, were the 2 best 170lb fighters of all time. Frankie did it.....at 145.
Frankie finished Cub, and Uriah is someone who like....never gets finished.
