Frankie has one loss in a much closer fight to Aldo and has dominated 4 opponents in a row. UFC must have something against Frankie. Guy is always exciting and tough as they come. They know he would derail the Conor hype train. But either way I'm glad Aldo is still fighting

I just kind of assumed that had Aldo not been able to fight for a month or two that they were gunna have this Conor vs Chad fight for the interim and then instead of having Aldo wait till the winner was healed up and ready to go in several months they'd just rematch him with Edgar as soon as he was ready and then have the winners of both face of in a unification bout

They probably see him as a more winnable fight for McGregor than Frankie.
I'm shocked they didn't plan for Conor vs Urijah instead.. More marketable and a more winnable fight IMO

Maybe he is in line to fight the winner of this fight and they don't want to fuck that and the connor fight up. Just spit balling who knows what the reason they called Mendes is. But Chad is actually higher ranked than Frankie and UFC's rankings are aggregates of a bunch of media outlets. Pretty much every one agrees Chad and Frankie are 1 and 2 behind Aldo it is just in what order.

Did they say this was an interim title? Aldo sounds like he still may be fighting, so at the very least I have to assume he won't be out too long if he has to skip this one.

It's for an interim title because conor is the headliner. He's the draw so they want to keep him in the main event.

It's honestly the only real explaination. It's not because they don't feel Frankie doesn't deserve it.
And the UFC can always justify it by saying Chad is still technically the #1 contender.
