Why isn't kickboxing more popular?

I mean glory was doing really well for a while and I expected to pick up more but the hype kind of died. MMA is alway my first combat sports love but kickboxing can be pretty exciting, plus I expected it to appeal more to the "stand and bang bro" type fans who lose interest when a fight hits the ground Phone Post 3.0

It suffers from the same problem boxing does as well as the fact that their is not an established and agreed upon set of rules used by every promotion, the lack of money also leads to a lack of stars.

Yeah I don't get it either.

Glory's fuckin awesome, so was k1, so is muay thai.

Maybe too awesome? Phone Post 3.0

The other thing is 90% of Kickboxers/Muay Thai fighters come from traditional backgrounds, so you dont see the drama you get with MMA. Although with the Thai's doing well in Glory now, you can see them starting to put on more of a "show" Phone Post 3.0

In my opinion, it's the big gloves. They should do it with small gloves. You can kick somebody with your bare shin, or knee their face, yet small gloves are too barbaric? Phone Post 3.0

The average fan just isn't aware of it. The UFC has taken over combat sports and people just have no idea what the fuck real kickboxing is in America. It's so hard to find on tv, plus there's so few Americans that even compete in the sport. Phone Post 3.0

I love kickboxing personally

Also doesn't help that stylistically most of the fighters look the same.

Boxing has that rock, paper, scissors core that to a layman gives it a narrative intrigue. How does the brawler do against the defensive dancer, the hard hitter against the technical fighter, etc

Most KBers look like they've come out of the Mike's gym clone machine. Raymond Daniels could've been a poster boy.

Only person capable of making KB mainstream is Idris Elba.

Punches sell.

Example - this NFL punch tackle:

Because most fans are fucking retards. They got sucked in by a select few people with highlight reel KOs, like Conor McGregor (I hate using him as an example, but social media rules nowadays), and not much else. Then get pissy when they try watch a whole card and most of it is wrestling.

Perhaps if guys in kickboxing were promoted more then some might care about it, and it could be a legit alternative. Or people could wisen up and seek it out themselves instead of complaining about how boring wrestling is. Phone Post 3.0

I'd like Israel Adesenya to get a bigger name. He's awesome and just flows so well. Fought in Glory just the other day. Undefeated in mma too. Phone Post 3.0

Does anyone else practically prefer grappling oriented the striking in MMA is more enjoyable, because of the inclusion of standing elbows and smaller gloves.

Effective striking in the context of both opponents being allowed to grapple is more impressive. MMA is so dynamic; Wonderboy's striking in the UFC is cooler than when he did it in kickboxing, because he's doing it against the threat of the takedown and a wider range of offensive arsenals from his opposition.

It needs a dominant promotion to package and market it in a modern profesional way, just like the UFC. Right now it's hard to keep up with even for people on the inside

VU

ive seen him around but never knew him by name. Now he's something different.

Those different guys are needed. Most

KB cards look like rock'em sock'em bouts.

K1 was soo good.and I wish glory was broadcast in Australia,  but yeah It would be great if KB was bigger world wide

I think kickboxing's lack of popularity in the US can be attributed to the old American "full contact" rules (which is confusing because it's all full contact) which were the norm from the 70's through the 90's. The shin/foot pads, lack of low kicks and knees, etc, made for boring fights. The only thing the kicks seemed to accomplish was getting in the way of the punches. Most casual fight fans and boxing purists wouldn't watch that.

Also, there was a lack of high level talent. Most kickboxers back then were basically amateurs who worked day jobs, and saying you were a "world champion" in kickboxing didn't mean a hell of a lot. Let's face it, if you were really any good, wouldn't you be doing boxing instead? What few stars there were such as Benny Urquidez, Pete Cunningham, and Dennis Alexio were just big fish in a very small pond.

It never achieved popularity back then because its direct competitor was boxing, and boxing was during its height of popularity and was everywhere, and they had cultivated true stars. Nowadays, boxing has declined and MMA is more or less the dominant combat sport. Once again, kickboxing (even with the improved rule set) has taken a back seat to the more mainstream sport.

At this point, I have my doubts that it could ever truly take off in America.

It's a shame because i would love to watch and follow kickboxing and muay ... Never been the most east thing to do here in the west. Phone Post 3.0

I love lion fights.

I know a lot of people that enjoy it. It's just not easily accessible. Somebody said that people aren't aware of it. When GLORY was on I know people that had no clue it was on TV , and once it started to get some traction they stopped airing fights. I wish fight pass would have picked them up, or even pickup lion fights.

I can't wait for Badr vs Rico in Dec.

IMO the casual fan belives going toe to toe with punchs is what is considered macho. They dont understand any other weapons, but every one can relate to punchs.
