The UFC is calling Randy Couture vs. Brock Lesnar the biggest match in the history of MMA, and they might be right. After all, along with his wrestling credentials, Lesnar brings with him a veritable swarm of fans from the WWE, each one complete with their cape and Mexican lutador mask. Aside from Chuck Liddell, who most of the unwashed masses probably still think is the UFC champion, Couture is the best known figure in the octagon.
Given these two poorly-researched facts, the sheer number of pay-per-views will no doubt be staggering. That's kind of incredible considering that, until the moment the fight was announced, literally nobody wanted to see it. Instead, the talk of the town was Couture vs. Fedor Emelianenko. Now, with Lesnar in the picture, Fedor has been relegated to some distant Affliction card where he will face Andrei Arlovski in a battle between power-punching Eastern Europeans. That ranks very low on the "care factor" to the average UFC fan or pro-wresting uber-geek; and the UFC knows it.
Randy Couture vs. Brock Lesnar
A former pro-wrestler from the WWE. A grizzled veteran of the UFC. A match that seems un-win-able to many critics. These are just a few themes that the Couture vs. Lesnar fight has in common with the Ken Shamrock vs. Tito Ortiz trilogy. Before you leap up onto your high-horse and ride around town shooting your pistols in protest, let me point out that, in addition to being a compete and total beat-down, Ken vs. Tito (Part 3) was one of the most watched fights in UFC history, beating out major league baseball, football and even the world championships of snooker. In other words, it's a recipe for big-time financial success; which is why Lesnar finds himself fighting for the UFC heavyweight championship after going 1-1 in the octagon.
That being said, Couture is not Ken Shamrock by a long shot. Still, I find myself filled with the same fear as when Couture fought Sylvia, expecting to see a giant thrash an old man to death. In that fight, I bet against Couture, but I was so happy to see him win, I actually hugged another man; which is extremely out of character for me.
Can Couture win this time? Absolutely. If he can weather the storm of toaster-sized fists in the first few rounds, he may be able to tire Lesnar out in the later rounds and win by either TKO or submission. Couture has a history of losing to bigger wrestlers like Josh Barnett and Ricco Rodriguez, but those fights were so long ago they may as well have happened in the late 70's. Just last week I made a bet with a friend that Lesnar would win, but I am known for sudden and unpredictable changes of opinion, so now I am going to go the other way. My Guess: Couture by TKO
