Woodley vs. Bears, Kaufman vs. Hashi among Nov. 20 Strikeforce Challengers V additions

by John Morgan and Dann Stupp on Oct 15, 2009 at 5:00 pm ET

A pair of bouts have joined two previously reported matchups to shape the Nov. 20 "Strikeforce Challengers V" card, which is being held at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kan.

Strikeforce executive Mike Afromowitz today confirmed with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that exciting welterweight prospect Tyron Woodley (4-0) takes on fellow up-and-comer Rudy Bears (10-3), and in women's action, undefeated Sarah Kaufman (10-0) meets the tough Takayo Hashi (12-1).

They'll join a Showtime-televised main card that also includes Kim Couture (1-1) vs. Kerry Vera (1-0) and Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante (7-2) vs. Aaron Rosa (12-2).

All four bouts are expected to be officially announced soon.

After appearing on a Strikeforce preliminary card earlier this year, Woodley made his TV debut on Sept. 25 and submitted Zach Light in a dazzling performance on Showtime. The former University of Missouri wrestling stand-out is now 4-0 with four submission victories, though his stand-up game continues to evolve with each fight.

While Light represented an opponent with experience (and not necessarily a stellar record), Bears gives Woodley his toughest test yet. In a little more than two years, Bears has posted an impressive 10-3 record with eight stoppages and a current six-fight win streak. He recently topped veteran Brendan Seguin (17-15-1 at the time) with a second-round TKO at "M-1: Breakthrough" in August.

Kaufman, a likely contender for the organization's 145-pound title, could earn her shot at the belt with a win over Hashi. Two of Kaufman's 10 wins have come in Strikeforce; both came via unanimous decision decision over notables Miesha Tate and Shayna Baszler. The soft- but well-spoken

Hashi, meanwhile, makes her Strikeforce debut after a five-year pro career spent mostly with the recently restructured Japanese-based Smackgirl promotion. She brings an eight-fight win streak into her promotional debut, though she's competed just once (a submission victory over Chisa Yonezawa) in the past 19 months.

The latest Strikeforce Challengers V card now includes:

Tyron Woodley vs. Rudy Bears*
Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante vs. Aaron Rosa*
Kim Couture vs. Kerry Vera*
Sarah Kaufman vs. Takayo Hashi*
* - Not officially announced.

Also worth noting is that Roger Gracie (2-0), who was expected to make his promotional debut at the card, is now unlikely to compete at the event. Strikeforce didn't comment on the matter, but a source told MMAjunkie.com the heavyweight fighter will likely be moved to a future card.
