Referee Chris Tognoni has come under a lot of criticism after his huge mistake at Noche UFC this past weekend.
Stopping the fight between Daniel Lacerda and Edgar Cháirez after he believed Lacerda was unconscious in a guillotine, it was very quickly clear that he was fine.
As the two men prepare to run it back next month as a result of the no contest, one fighter has been keeping receipts on Tognoni’s biggest mistakes.
In a video on his channel, #13-ranked lightweight Renato Moicano called Tognoni ‘the worst referee of all time’ and explained why.
“Again, I don’t want to trash on Chris Tognoni but I want something to change and referees should be held accountable because one time they fcked up, they could fck up the entire UFC fighter’s career. We have seen that over and over again.”
Renato Moicano Lists Seven Mistakes That Tognoni Has Made As A Referee
During his video, Moicano uses seven examples of Tognoni making mistakes to back up his point.
Starting with Mike Rodriguez against Ed Herman, Moicano shows that Rodriguez should have won the fight after his legal strikes were called as fouls before he was submitted later on in the fight.
A similar circumstance happened in the fight between Jessica-Rose Clark and Sarah Alpar where Tognoni stopped the fight due to an illegal knee that was within the rules.
Moicano then said that his loss to Rafael Fiziev was an early stoppage though he has no hard personal feelings towards Tognoni.
“Money” Moicano also points out Tognoni’s failings to punish fighters for grabbing the fence in the fight between Phil Hawes and Nassourdine Imavov.
This continues into the fight between Tim Elliott and Tagir Ulanbekov where Elliott was clearly grabbing his opponent’s gloves.
Tognoni also deducted a point for a headbutt in the fight between Doo Ho Choi and Kyle Nelson for what appeared to be an unintentional foul.
Rounding it out by circling back to Noche UFC this past weekend, Moicano makes a lot of arguments for where Tognoni’s officiating has led to fighters getting away with fouls or directly influencing the outcome of a fight.
wasnt out
but his arm dropped like he was
When a fighter is caught in a choke and appears to go limp, stopping the fight is a reasonable call. Taking that win away from Chairez on replay is a much bigger travesty in my opinion.
He’s FAR from the worst of all time. He’s actually a good Ref imo and everyone makes mistakes.
Replays should be used for missed eye pokes, illegal knees, groin shots and headbutts that result in a fight getting unfairly finished. Not for overturning subs that were locked in and 99% finished but the ref may or may not have stepped in early.
Taking a fighters sub away when he had it locked in and the other fighter appeared limp is fair?

What mazagatti did to Brock in the first mir fight was the worst reffing of all time. Went far beyond incompetence.
