WV Jiu-Jitsu Tournament

Gi and No Gi Jiu-Jitsu Tournament The Return to West Virginia
Advanced BKJ presents it's next installment of their very popular and successful jiu-jitsu tournaments.

Saturday, April 30th, 2005, at the Herbert Hoover High School in Elkview, WV (near Charleston) both jiu-jitsu and submission grappling tournaments will be held with numerous divisions and age groups. This will be a very exciting weekend full of action and competition.

West Virginia provides a great location to many of the surrounding states that are starving for a nice format to compete in and, because of this, we look for this tournament to be very successful. We already have teams confirmed from all over the east coast and we are receiving some tremendous interest from teams on the West Coast as well. We look for interest to increase as the word gets out and we are sure this tournament will be very successful for all who participate.

Pre-registration is now open and we encourage individuals to get their forms in as soon as possible. This will not only help the tournament run smoother, but will also give those who pre-register a discount. The pre-registration deadline is April 15th, 2005:

Both Gi and No-Gi Divisions are available for Men, Women, Teens, and Children.

Beautiful trophies and awards will be presented to the winners and look for more information regarding prize money and sponsorship to come soon!

We have also added a full contact, continous sparring, event for many of the traditional martial artists who wish to compete as well. There will definitely be something for everyone!

The athletic commission has decided to ban all Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments in West Virginia.

This is a very unfortunate event for everyone who trains and competes in our state. We have had small tournaments here for well over twenty years and the jiu-jitsu scene was just starting to get bigger and bigger.

The last two tournaments that I ran here grew each time we had them and this time we were expecting our biggest turnout yet.

Although I will be successful in getting this tournament to proceed via a court order, the damage and hassle have become too much for me to continue with this tournament at this date.

The next step is for me to fight for jiu-jitsu through the courts and prove that it is a safe sport. At this current point in time, the athletic commission feels that their beloved "Toughman" events are far safer than any jiu-jitsu tournament (which any educated person knows is ludicrous).

The banning of MMA in WV is bad enough but the banning of a simple martial art, such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, is just crazy!

I will be putting some things together to help legalize Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, once again, and I will also be trying to educate many officials who don't know what the sport is. If anyone would like to offer any help or materials please email me at:
