MMAWeekly.com makes a case for Yves for fighter of the year, along side BJ and Silva.
I def. think Yves has been super hot lately, finishing his last 2 opponents. He went 4-0 this year and fought top guys.
The only problem I have is that out of the 2 best guys he faced, he barely got by one of them. Yves was cool about it and acknowledgd that it was close and offered to fight Franca again.
I think that fight was a case of too close to call. Now, of course, the bjj trolls were screaming "robbery!" afterwards but I dont think anyone could make the case that it wasnt a close fight and with close fights, decisions will be debatable (which means "no robbery!" either way).
I remember Franca throwing a lot of high kicks and Yves simply not countering them. Sure, Franca's kicks werent connecting and were probably meant to bait Yves into a takedown but I just think Yves did not do enough standing to win the fight. His movement is awesome and looks like he's floating like a butterfly in the cage but in that fight, I barely remember him connecting with any substantial strikes.
On the ground, Franca didnt really have his way either but I think he was more offensive than Yves was standing.
So, I would have scored it a draw myself but if I HAD to give it to someone, I think I would have picked Franca. At any rate, because Yves clearly did not convincingly get past Franca, I dont think he is in contention of "Fighter of the Year" (though he def. deserves honourable mentions).
Thoughts?
