51 points to 0 - Gui @ Rickson cup match (Vid)

Putting on a show, I personally see no harm. Do your thing... Phone Post

it's disrespectful to your opponent, i'm sure most anyone would rather have your A game and get tapped in under a minute then be toyed with. for me that's no different than making yawn faces, or spanking him or some shit. respect should be shown to anyone who competes responsibly.

Gui is showing amazing skill- but I'm not a big fan of him running up the score instead of just mercifully submitting someone he is superior to. I think it sets a bad example for his students that look up to him.

I don't know. I know there's a line somewhere about disrespect in a match, but I don't think Gui crossed it.

When you enter a tournament in the adult black belt category, you better be up to par, it's the highest level of competition our sport offers. If someone pays for their entry fee and you step on the mat with them, he can do to you whatever he is able, within the rules, for ten minutes.

Honestly I feel that the opponent received exactly as much respect as a black belt jiu jitsu player that he had earned.

Id also like to remind everyone that the poor guy could have forfeited at any point in the match. Phone Post

Just don't try and heel hook Galvao.  It didn't end good for that dude either.

I didnt bother watching the entire thing- but didn't Gui pass, let him reguard, and then pass again- only to look at the scoreboard to see the points accumulate?

That's in bad taste.

geez.

They were flown in to put on a show

Sometimes these things happen in BJJ...

They were paid to come in and put on a show, that was their reason for being there.

How can you fault Gui for doing exactly that?

I think people are blowing this out of proportion and a little to sensitive

They were flown out there to put on a show, this was his first match of the tournament, Gui just getting warmed up and put it on these guy for 7 minutes. It's not like he was even showing off, just working his normal stuff and than put him away, big deal

Probably the best 7 minutes of training that guy could get

Jeebus.

Has anyone trained with the other guy or know anything about him?  I assume he's a "legit" black belt?

Everybody knows the saying that "There's black belts, and then there are black belt black belts," but wowzer did he get dominated.  You don't usually get to see that play out at a tournament like that.  Reminds me of some of the training videos you see of Garcia, Moura, or Draculino when they just manhandle high level guys.

What's amazing is that if the other guy is truly a black belt (albeit at the "club" level rather than the "elite" level), he would probably run over many of us on this forum.  As a blue belt, I can say that I've never rolled with a black belt against whom I felt competitive--it's always a beatdown.  So to see a black belt who'd probably sub me all over the place get utterly tooled in a tournament is pretty shocking.

That said, assuming he has a good attitude about it, this really may have been a great experience for him.  How many people really get to roll with one of the Mendez brothers at a tourney?  And he got to feel the pressure and see what he was capable of for 7 solid minutes, which was probably pretty eye opening.

Appears it's Nathan Adamson, who along with his brother became Rafael Lovato Jr.'s 5th and 6th black belts just this summer: http://www.graciemag.com/2013/07/adamson-brothers-receive-the-black-belt/

So he's definitely legit.  It just showed him how deep the black belt division is, and how far he has to go to be able to compete at the elite level.

Guy who was a solid brown belt just a few months ago =/= Competitive with Gui Mendes.

No shame in that.

That guy is a friend of mine and he'll never live that day down. Haha haha... Nicest guy in the world tho. Phone Post 3.0

You guys are all wrong . This is clearly punishment for trying to have a better hairstyle than Gui. Phone Post 3.0

At some point the match should have been called. In professional sports, there's an unwritten rule that you don't run up the score to respect your opponent. That should have been the case here. He could have tapped him out when it was 20-0. No need to score 51 points first.

In a way he did the guy a favor. The guy paid to compete, and he got 7 minutes with one of the best BJJers in the world. Gui could have easily just tapped him and moved on, but the guy got an experience he will never forget.

Good Guy Gui FTW

I can mostly go with you on everything but the first sentence.

As to the second sentence on, sure . . . I guess.  But I will say this is a little different than a high school football game or some such thing.  You can compete in BJJ at as high of a level as you like for as long as you like.  In that sense, it's arguably good for new black belts to experience the "deep end of the pool" early in their careers.  There's an argument here that--unlike a high school football game where most players graduate in a short period of time and never play again--this was a "learning experience."  If that's true, getting a few more minutes of learning isn't the worst thing in the world.

As to the first sentence, I've got to say no.  BJJ is a sport where no matter how far behind you are on points, you can always win with a submission.  The opponent, dominated as he was, is still a Lovato black belt.  I've got to believe that given an opportunity--such as if Gui relaxed for just one careless moment to wave at the crowd or some such thing--a Lovato black belt is fully capable of locking on a fast kimura or guillotine, etc.  If that had happened, we'd all be watching the video praising the guy for his resilence and will-to-win after being so dominated.  The match definitely needed to be allowed to continue until it's natural expiration.

Khelso - I fuckin love that fake guard pull/ankle pick takedown he does. Wish my knees could handle drilling that Phone Post 3.0
Went to one of his seminars and he was doin this to EVERYONE. Now I try to do it. Phone Post 3.0

I sparred with Gui once and he didn't score anywhere near 51 points on me
