Affliction Paying Fighters as they Should be Paid

Sagiv Lapkin -  Because Affliction isn't going to be around much longer. The UFC is going no where.

I remember my Sys Admin saying the same thing about his staff when they got hired away by a rival start-up.

I'm just sayin'.....

dabigchet - let's assume:

- fighter pay is 5 million dollars
- total event cost is 10 million dollars to produce
- even brings in 5 million dollars
- affliction loses 5 million dollars total

in this scenario, how much are the fighters worth?

now THERE is a guy that's taken an Econ class.

 ROFLMAO!

Cindy

Affliction should pay these fighters well because they've trained twice for one payday.

All this talk reminds me of my dot-com days, when I was trying to land IT guys, and you'd get 19 year-old kids walking out on an 80K a year job...on the first day.....on their LUNCH BREAK...because they found a better gig.

The free market is the free market.

The UFC is only obligated to pay what they have to pay to retain the services of their fighters. End of story. If guys can do better elsewhere, they will, and salaries will adjust to reflect that. After every show there's always someone that makes a thread kvetching about the low pay for entry-level guys but those same people never seem to reckon an estimation of what guys are pulling in sponsorships...which is several times that 3/3K figure from what I'm told (not a bunch more, but I'd guess most guys are pulling 10K minimum between purse and sponsors). Those sponsorships are far more lucrative fighting for the UFC than anywhere else. Which is good for the fighters. Try getting 10K from Condom Depot to fight in some far-flung organization....

That's not much different than the low-end of the undercard for boxing, which an entirely different sport to begin with. But look at your own job. Are you paid what you're worth? What your boss thinks you're worth? Those are almost always going to be two different numbers. The free market is the dynamic that forces a compromise.

The larger question is how the UFC/Affliction/whoever else emerges battle will play out. It's a new sport and while nobody likes monopolies, having seen the first sport I loved -- boxing -- get completely shredded by competing sanctioning bodies, it's a paradox for me in terms of how many orgs you'd want to prosper vs. cohesive matchups.....no more Fedor-like situations. Who knows. But the climate is definitely different...just like the dot-com craze, in the last couple years venturing fools have been savagely weeded out of MMA and there is considerable reluctance to get burned by getting in.

$800 for Tim Sylvia??? I'd really like to talk to the exec that thought that was a good idea
