kilemark - I can't seem to get a good nights rest after a tough training session. It's over around 9:30 and the time I get home, walk the dog, shower and eat it's around 10:45 or 11.

I then either can't wind down and I end up going to bed too late or I have restless sleep/drank too much water after class and I have to get up in the middle of the night. Maybe I'm just getting old. lol.
Have you tried packing some food so that you can eat right after training and not have to wait until it's so late?
Also, I would look into taking a product like ZMA from biotest which is only about $15 a month or something like melatonin. Both of those products would help you wind down and get some good deep sleep. It's ZMA for me and it does wonders, I take it right before bed and it kicks in about 30 - 45 minutes later.
If I go to bed and feel restless I usually just get up right away and go to the living room, do ten minutes of foam rolling. The foam rolling gets much of the tension out of my body and the ten minutes helps me think of how my day went and at times I may even review my sparring, it really helps me wind down my mind.
Good advice. I have read a little about ZMA but I haven't tried it. I am always a little hesitant when it comes to sleep aids but this may be worth trying.
If I continue to train late I think it will come down to a specific routine to help wind down. Maybe a sleep aide, not eating or drinking too much after class, not watching bjj techniques right before bed, etc.

ZMA is great but it won't help you fall asleep. It will help you get more out of less sleep though, and feel fantastic when you do get a good night's sleep. It usually gives me crazy dreams too, like alpha brain, which I think comes from the B6 in it.
Serious exercise before sleep is never a good idea. Your body is amped up and the endorphines released during training both prevent sleep. Its not just BJJ.. its any physical activity.
Takes me at least to hours to wind down enough to fall asleep if i train at night.
It's a big problem for me, though I only train at night once in a while.
The worst situation for me is if I train hard on Monday night, then have to get up at 5 am to teach the early class the next morning.
It's hard enough to go to sleep, but the stress of possibly oversleeping the next morning (and standing up the class) makes it extremely hard to relax.
Try lots of sex with what you got at home, with wife, girlfriend, or boyfriend. Leave the dog alone. Masturbate instead. It's only a sin if you taste it.
