Made me less of a fan of Ben seeing him get his ass kicked like that so easily. I was thinking he was some kind of wrestling phenom. I think Colby and Usman absolutely destroy him.

He is a wrestling phenom, and would outwrestle them badly. There are levels to this game.

They are trolling but I sort of get what they are saying in terms of Askren getting slammed by Lawler and Luis Santos rag dolled him in their ONE match before the eye poke…if you watch that 2-3 minute clip, Santos somehow makes Askren look like a novice in wrestling and Mma!

I get that Burroughs/Askren was for charity but it still doesn’t look good that the man that UFC is claiming is the elite in wrestling just got completely shut down by a guy that isn’t even in Mma! Now, everyone will be saying “Burroughs would be unbeatable in Mma with 6 months bjj training!” And that’s not what you want UFC fans saying lol…you want them to believe the truly baddest guys on the planet at the current time are actually in the UFC!

There was a similar thread a few months back when Cormier beat Stipe and won the hvwt belt…lots of guys were Scoffing at Cormier actually being the toughest guy on the planet as there were quite a few current Olympic wrestlers from Russia and elsewhere that would eat him alive…

That last part especially makes no sense whatsoever. There aren’t “quite a few” Olympic wrestlers that would eat Cormier alive in MMA or any kind of fighting. There are quite a few that could eat him alive in wrestling, but they’re 10 years away from being championship MMA material, the same way Cormier was when he finished his Olympic career. That’s even assuming they’ve got a championship level chin and other attributes the fight game needs but wrestling doesn’t.

“I get that Burroughs/Askren was for charity but it still doesn’t look good that the man that UFC is claiming is the elite in wrestling just got completely shut down by a guy that isn’t even in Mma!”

And that part doesn’t make sense either. OF COURSE the active Olympians are going to beat retired wrestlers and such at their own specialty. Does that mean they can beat an active fighter at his own specialty? Hell no! Wrestling for MMA is very different too, a much bigger gap than between Freestyle and Greco for example. This ends up in situations where guys like NCAA champ Koschek gets outwrestled by a guy with no classic wrestling credentials at all.

If you’re trying to say the UFC shouldn’t have allowed the event because it might hurt their brand due to some ignorant low level fanboys, that I can understand, but from the goals Askren and Burroughs were trying to achieve it was a huge win in terms of money raised and the attention it drew. Maybe small loss for the UFC, but if Askren had done a bit better it would have been a win for them as well, so that was a gamble on their part. With the exposure they got, it might still be a net win for the UFC.

I’m not the one that claimed there were Olympic wrestlers or others out there currently that would beat Cormier as these guys were amateur wrestling junkies…i remember them showing footage of a Cuban monster that’s 260 and moves like a cat…people were acting like Cormier would get squashed like bug by him …

10 years away? Nah

After watching Burroughs bury Askren, of course many people would stop talking about Askren and instead start talking about Burroughs! The ‘what ifs’ and I totally get it…I’m not saying the UFC should have stopped the event but just that it didn’t look good for their supposed new ‘best funk wrestler’ getting brutalized…rules aside, most people see Askren getting double legged into the mat …

/\

Do you even understand the difference between freestyle and folkstyle?

Would bet the vast majority of people who watched that event were wrestling fans. Not a single one of them doesn’t know that Jordan is one of the best ever and is at the top of his game.

Only non wrestlers would look at it like you are saying. How many non-wrestlers, or at least non-wrestling fans, do you think saw that event? I would speculate very, very, few.

Well every hardcore mma fan saw it. It was in mma news and it’s all over YouTube

Like I said, that is very few people and many of them have at least some wrestling experience and “get it”

Those MMA fans like you that seem to have no comprehension of the levels in wrestling are the minority IMHO.

Askren deserves heavy credit for the sacrifice. Criticism of him in this instance is pure ignorance.
