In certain parts of the world, like where Khabib is from, wrestling and fighting is just the culture. Chechnya, Dagestan, North Ossetia, etc. have all been in some state of conflict with Russia and surrounding territories for decades. They openly were at war with Russia twice in the last 25 years. Grozny got carpet bombed into Swiss cheese basically. You have several generations of people, specifically men, who have grown up in a war zone where the only real options to climb out of poverty were to be a guerrilla soldier and fight Russians, become part of organized crime, or become a badass wrestler. Or some combination of all 3. Now when you take groups of children who aren’t being coddled and have grown up poor in tough conditions and have them coached by world championship winning wrestling coaches, and you take the best of the best and have them do nothing but train to wrestle all day, you get some real badass guys who see this as a literal life and death struggle. It wouldn’t matter if they were black, white, blue, purple or chartreuse. They’d still be badass just because of their cultural upbringing and their unfortunate geography. The list of wrestling champions from Dagestan is incredible to think that all of them came from such a small place.

You see the same phenomenon in all sports. Agents are making recruiting trips primarily to Africa but worldwide. They find a huge or very skilled basketball player, soccer player, football player etc. promise them the world and bring them to America. All too often it is for a major cut of their future earnings. Even our high school teams are permeated by foreign players who were “sponsoredl” to come live here. Take a look at the prep schools rosters (there are even several here in backwater WV!) and see where they hail from. It just took MMA a little longer to pick up on this trend. Many sports agents are unscrupulous and shady.
