BJJ is simple. Why is is so hard to learn?

Lol. Hillary always comes off as a huge bitch on this forum. Although I'm sure in real life she's a sweetheart.

She didn't used to though. There has been a definite change.

Yeah...once she made black belt she turned into a martinet. Similar to what happened to Shen and Andre after their promotions.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think Shen was the one who stole my 10th Planet beanie from the locker room at Rey Diogos, back in 2007. He has always been a bit shifty tho'.

I would also advise to never take your eyes off Andre if he is lurking about.

Oh I know about them, cowboy.

This reenforces my decision, after over 15 years of grappling, not to get involved in the "rank" drama. That's one of the many reasons I love combative sports like wrestling, boxing and kickboxing. You just train, work your butt off and content with the competition in front of you. relying on the the love of your sport, truth of internal awareness, competition and technical proficiency as your judge, oppose to a colored belt.

Let's just agree that we all love BJJ and move on.

Take this trash to the Catch Wrestling forum...

Oh wait...

BTW my last post was made in a spirit of humor and goodwil towards all grapplers

No offense taken! :)

checkuroil - It only becomes simple after a decade of experience Phone Post

I agree with this.

I'm no where near that long training and many sequences are complicated in movement and premise. I've done over 20 years in MA and have really hardly ever seen what I am learning now. A lick flow sequence with correct position and posture is not easy, and I don't care who says it.

It's all down to the framework you train your tech into... Once your framework is developed, building into it is simple. I personally think Marcelo's game is completely distilled, and his framework is simple but tried and tested. It is the execution of base, transition, and posture that you need to integrate into this framework that takes a lot of time and experience. Once it's there though, it's there, and I bet you learn pretty quickly with a lot of experience.

A good example would be watching the purple/brown belts work a technique they have learned in class during the roll. Money says a few of them land it. Now watch the White belts... Phone Post

thats a typo not auto-correct. auto-correct wouldn't fix the word "lock" since it is a real and common word.

I am. The internet brings out stupid people, and they make me really irritated.

I actually recognized the post that I spoke out of hand and offered logical explanation for the rest. That makes me a bitch?

Hillary - It's not hard to learn. Anyone who puts their mat time in will learn. It's just that we're such a selfish culture we expect immediate return on anything we invest in and you're not going to get good at BJJ in a year. Give it five, patiently, and then come back.

I'm very glad I came to check out this thread.

Hillary, much thanks. This was just the insight I was looking for.

After class last night, I found myself getting frustrated for my inability to "get it" and really understand and execute even basic fundamentals. Day in day out, I try very hard to pay attention to my instructor and drill correctly, but as soon as we get into some sparring/rolling I feel like a fish out of water. The limited technique that I have learned (correction: that I have been shown/taught, as it is still all very foreign to me, I cant really say that I have "learned" it), it goes right out the window. It feels as if I have never taken a class before, or that I dont know anything about anything BJJ related (which is true). I flop around like a half dead fish and/or end up relying on my size/strength to muscle out of a bad spot.

I know its still early (I've only been training for 3 months) but it has been frustrating to see no growth or advancement in that time. Every day seems like the first day. I now know that I need to readjust my own personal expectations, and just continue to work hard and (hopefully) it will all click for me one day. Guess I need to just enjoy the journey until that happens.

I've been doing it at an insanely fast pace for five years, and I feel like a newbie any time I train with someone good. It's part of the sport, and most of the reward is the dedication required.

Everyone sucks for a long time, everyone has someone who can kick their ass, and everyone gets frustrated. The reward is in your own perseverance. There's no tips, no secrets, just pay attention and train. That's really it.

I haven't looked back at this thread in a day or two, but I noticed the conversation where Hillary "goes off" about the guy turning down the stripe.

I'll be quite honest and say if that happened in my school my instructor would have told the guy "if you don't think I'm competent enough to judge your ability then you need to find a new instructor" and would have asked him to leave.

I don't think it's unreasonable for her to get mad about this, it honestly kind of ticks me off a tad that someone who's probably getting something retarded like their 2nd stripe on their fucking white belt would turn it down from what was most likely a black belt. Huge amount of disrespect to the senior instructors of the school.

Gold post from Hillary. Phone Post

"everyone has someone who can kick their ass"

what if that "someone" includes everybody at the gym including the 5 year old white belts in the kids classes, cause honestly thats how I feel.

I guess I just need to use that as motivation to train harder and keep working at it.
