Carlson Gracie Statue Inaugurated in Copacabana

Carlson Gracie's statue was inaugurated in Copacabana today. Here is some video footage with many interviews including one with Robson Gracie (Renzo's father) at the 4:20 mark and one with Relson Gracie at the 5:20 mark. Unfortunately for us English speakers it's all in Portuguese.

Awesome this happened.

that is great... Just curious what with the general local public outside of bjj circles? Are a lot of people like... "who the hell is that guy?" Or is he somewhat revered by all?

I've met a number of Brazilians here (who don't do jiu-Jitsu) that "Think" they've heard of the Gracies, some "Oh yeah.." and a couple have never heard of them. Just Sad.

Relson gets back to Hawaii in about a week, I'll ask him to translate and get the back story.   Relson always spoke highly of Carlson and we've had Jr. Over for seminars in the past which I thought were great.

Would love to have english subtitles on that.

Oss!

you can get the jist of it by turning on the cc. As always with autotranslate, it also contains a good bit of gibberish

You're getting youtbe translated sub titles?  Man I'm totally a youtube noob, gonna try.

Edit: Thank you!  This is awesome!

Edit2: Ok, not so awesome lol.  Still the tech is impressive.  Audio to subtitle to translated subtitle ... a lot lost in translation.

I think because if the UFc and BJJ schools all over it has changed somewhat in the past 5 years. I have met Brazilians (from late 90s to about 2008) who know nothing absolutely about the Gracies and have never heard of them. I have met a couple that have heard of them but know little and my Uncle’s friends who are Brazilian, like many Brazilians who know or have heard about “Jiu-Jitsu” think it is for thugs. He is from Rio, so it was in all the papers.

I still remember douchebag me telling some Brazilian girl I met that I do Jiu-jitsu from Brazil (excitedly!) and she kind of gave me a polite half-smile and avoided me. I found out later that she assumed I was a pit-boy thug type and into drugs, etc. because I do Jiu-jitsu. Luckily, it got straightened out later.

Most here do not realize BJJ in Brazil has a reputation -well-deserved - of thuggery.

I think both Judo and TKD are more popular in Brazil despite what we read. I think more kids in Brazil do TKD than BJJ. There is also a strong Karate scene in Brazil too, and Capoeira.

Brazil has produced some top notch Kyokushin fighters over the decades that have gone on to win the world's.  It's 3rd world country grit and adversity that makes them successful.  Look at after all these years, they still win the majority of world titles in jiujitsu.  Tough living there, and that thug reputation is real.

Relson gets back to Hawaii in about a week, I'll ask him to translate and get the back story.   Relson always spoke highly of Carlson and we've had Jr. Over for seminars in the past which I thought were great.

I have gotten the opprotunity to train at a relson school and a carlson school.  I was happily surprised to see how much self defense they are doing in the carlson school.  i always heard (and read) that the side that carlos developed was more sport bjj focused.

Historically, Carlson Gracie academy was always very self-defense oriented. New students who signed up would be taught some of the self-defense techniques first before being integrated into the group class. Carlson Gracie Team has some awesome self-defense teachers, Julio Fernandez and Marcelo Alonso being two names that come to mind. The two years I trained under Julio from 1996-1998 he showed self-defense techniques every class. When I moved to Chicago to train at the Carlson Gracie gym in 1998 there was less emphasis on self-defense and more on MMA until Senior moved to Chicago in 2002 at which time the self-defense component was reintroduced.

I wonder how long it's going to take until someone steals it.

if you get a spare minute, could you give a quick synopsis of what robson said? it would be greatly apreciated, the auto translate of his part was the makings of glorious nonsense. i fear the portuguese will forever remain a mystery to me.

Awesome! I tried but couldn't b there for this!

Thanks for posting Aaron.
