I heard that consistent exposure to being submerged in very cold water can increase one's level of pain tolerance.
Is there any truth to this?
And if so why?
Thanks.

From my experience, it just lead to a higher mental tolerance of things that were uncomfortable.
I don't think it would do anything physically to allow a higher threshold but like he said it will get you accostomed to uncomfortable situations and you will train yourself to just deal with stuff.
My ? is what is the advantage of a higher pain threshold?
It carves a "toughness groove" into your brain, according to former SEAL Richard Machowicz.
Although I think he was only joking.
Exposing yourself to painful situations generally gives you a better control of how you react to pain. Might not be the safest thing in the world however...
I've only experimented with it as an alternative to coffee.
"My ? is what is the advantage of a higher pain threshold?"
To be able to absrob higher levels of pain when fighting.
To be better able to push through the damn "I give up" voice in your head...
Why do you think Fedor lists one of his hobbies as "Swimming in Ice-holes"... Just a thought =)
How about having an ice bath in your dressing room before the fight? Run to the ring with your body still numb and you won't feel a thing.

If its good enough for Fedor it is good enough for me.
Great way of relaxing after a workout, totally increases your heartiness in the face of unpleasant surroundings.
I was swimming in 40* water over break after doing heavy lifts, and I noticed a marked decrease in my soreness and stiffness the next day. Didn't affect my gains negatively, either.
I live right next to the North sea. I think I may start going for regular dips.
