Dana White has Askren Asterisk induced meltdown

Apparently  the UFC 170 lb. division being widely regarded as highly tainted with the convenient exclusion of Ben Askren has sent Dana into a tailspin.

ONEFC has the best Welterweight on the planet. You can tell by how Rory reacts that he knows Askren is a legit threat, look at how he moves around.. do we have any body language experts on here?

I am the Paul Heyman of MMA.

In all seriousness I think it's a fascinating subject.

The UFC is starting a trend of  being unable to sign the unbeaten, best fighter on the planet.

First it was Fedor now it's Askren.

So why isn't askren in the ufc? Dana pretty much said he would work with him if he wanted to be there. Phone Post 3.0

Did you even watch the video?

If it wasn't a big deal then Dana White wouldn't be reacting the way he is in the clip. I really respect Dana's passion here, that means he does care at least.

Again I pride myself on going a step further, so I will use the Kubler-Ross model or the five stages of grief to analyze the situation.

DABDA

"
  1. Denial — One of the first reactions is Denial, wherein the survivor imagines a false, preferable reality.
  2. Anger — When the individual recognizes that denial cannot continue, it becomes frustrated, especially at proximate individuals.
  3. Bargaining — The third stage involves the hope that the individual can avoid a cause of grief. Usually, the negotiation for an extended life is made with a higher power in exchange for a reformed lifestyle. Other times, they will use anything valuable against another human agency to extend or prolong the life. People facing less serious trauma can bargain or seek compromise.
  4. Depression —
During the fourth stage, the individual becomes saddened by the certainty of death. In this state, the individual may become silent, refuse visitors and spend much of the time mournful and sullen.
  5. Acceptance — "It's going to be okay."; "I can't fight it, I may as well prepare for it."
In this last stage, individuals embrace mortality or inevitable future, or that of a loved one, or other tragic event. People dying may precede the survivors in this state, which typically comes with a calm, retrospective view for the individual, and a stable condition of emotions."

First it was denial. Dana flatly said that Askren wasn't UFC level or good enough to compete in the UFC, along with something about Askren "just not being my type of guy". We do know that a contract of substance was not offered.

Now we are in the Anger stage. Do you not see how the story changed to Ben Askren doesn't want to fight in the UFC? Dana is pissed off that he made a mistake by not signing Ben Askren, that is harming the legitimacy of his sporting organization.  Dana/UFC deep down inside loves having the best fight the best.  Askren is being paid very well by Singaporeans with deep pockets. The UFC WW division needs Askren to lose badly. The Askren Asterisk is rising problem for anyone trying to say they're the best @ 170 lbs.

Hopefully bargaining is next. Bring the trash bag money. This is a shake down.

Ask ten is a very good fighter and I would love to see him in the UFC. However, he has not faced consistent high level competition and is therefore not the best 170 pounder on the planet. Phone Post 3.0

Has anybody shown this to Ben Askren. The best WW in the world is not actively fighting right now. The best active WW in the world does not fight for the UFC IMO. Rory and Robbie are fighting for 3rd place. Phone Post 3.0

Anyone who thinks Dan Hornbuckle, Lyman Good, Nick Thompson, Jay Hieron, Karl Amoussou, Nobutatsu Suzuki, Andrey Koreshkov, and Douglas Lima is not consistent high level competition for a guy who has been involved in MMA for only 6 years, then that person just isn't very well educated on the sport of MMA.

Pat Giles - So why isn't askren in the ufc? Dana pretty much said he would work with him if he wanted to be there. Phone Post 3.0

Ben is fighting in a more dangerous league right now. ONEFC.

Stomps, soccer kicks, knees to a downed opponent etc.

I am not hell bent on Askren fighting in the UFC. The UFC Welterweight division is weird without Ben Askren and GSP involved.

rory is clearly gnawing the inside of his mouth -literally biting his lip-- the symbolism couldn't be more plain.

he definitely has something to say. something that either dana or his own crippling autism is preventing him from articulating.

Compare that to the resume of Johny Hendricks who isn't even champion right now. TJ Grant, Josh Koscheck, Jon Fitch, Carlos Condit, Martin Kampmann, Robbie Lawler, Matt Brown and arguably the greatest Welterweight ever in GSP. It's incomparable, my friend. Until Askren puts together that kind of resume, he will never be considered the best, and rightly so. Phone Post 3.0

dudes not even top ten.

You know what? I'm not too concerned with Askren not being signed. If, as i'm told, he has no real stand up game, and merely wins by smooshing oppoents....then he can roam the Orient for all i care.  I wanna see glorified boxing and Muy Thai with a couple of takedowns thrown in.  Not college level wrestling

At least you're open and honest about that.

I want to see the best fight the best personally.

Hey Ben Askren has fought and won against the best fighters in the north southwest upper mountain region of the south west council of welterweights of Southeast Asia. How dare you question his awesome sauce. Phone Post 3.0

now we can only speculate as to what rory might say but it might be something like:

gsp retired. fitch and palhares are gone. thatch and laflare both lost. lombard is suspended. all the title fights are now rematches. other than henderson, askren is the only man on earth who can save the division from being relegated forever to warming up the brazilian crowd for a demetrious johnson card on fight pass.

"You don't have to be my best friend to fight here" -- Dana White

Evidently you don't have to be one of the best fighters in your weight class also.

The dude can't even respond to Dana's bullshit because Dana's fanboys are drowning him out.

And using Tito as a example of someone that he worked with despite not getting along with is completely off base. Tito had already been apart of the UFC for years prior to his falling out with Dana.

Just watched the video. I think Dana is in the wrong for saying Askren doesn't want to fight in the UFC etc. Not long ago Askren met with Dana and Lorenzo to try and get signed when his Bellator contract ran out. However they would not give him a contract, weather it was for reasons relating to Bellator or his fighting style who knows, but definitley not right on Dana's part to say he doesnt want, or is afraid to fight in the UFC. Askren did his best to be signed by them. They refused, so he went to One FC. Askren deserves to be in it and is a legit fighter. One FC also looks to be a smart decision at the minute though considering all the stuff they are doing in Asia.

but what if you own your own promotion? or some guy you were talking to had a heart attack and willed his regional MMA promo to you.

so you take the reigns, and have some exciting stand up fighters. you're making money, and the crowd loves your top stand and bang guys.

But then some college wrestler comes in and makes hash of all your stand up dudes.

The crowds began to fade away as they miss everything they were used to: stand up, long range attacks, overhand rights, KOs, and fights over quickly.  This one kid is so good but in a utterly boring style, three rounds of a guy laying on top of another guy, or cage pressing...

you'd soon wish that the wrestling kid never came along.

1. Ben is an Olympic wrestler.
2. The guy is extremely marketable and finishes fights.

The problem I have with MMA right now is the entertainment aspect that the UFC and Bellator are catering to. This will never be looked at as a legit sport when you're signing pro wrestlers and you have an obnoxious Irish dude running around at press conferences like a jackass while the President of the company stands there and laughs.

If people don't like grappling then they should watch kickboxing. It's 50% of the sport and people act like its a hindrance. Phone Post 3.0
