Strikeforce: Diaz vs Cyborg pay
"Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg" salaries: Nick Diaz leads $463,500 fighter payroll
by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Jan 31, 2011 at 2:35 pm ET
Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz ($150,000) and fellow defending champion Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza ($85,000) were the top earners at this past weekend's "Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg" event.
MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today requested and received the list of salaries from the California State Athletic Commission.
The event took place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., and aired on Showtime. The total disclosed payroll for the event was $463,500.
Diaz defeated Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos ($20,000) in the night's headliner, and middleweight champ Souza stopped Lawler ($65,000) in the co-headliner.
Perhaps the most notable figure was the salary attached to former NFL great Herschel Walker. Despite his heavy promotion of the card and the interest he drew for his second pro fight, he earned a flat rate of $5,000. However, additional compensation likely came in other forms for the 48-year-old fighter.
The full payouts include:
Champ Nick Diaz: $150,000 (no win bonus)
def. Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos: $20,000
Champ Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza: $85,000 ($15,000 win bonus)
def. Robbie Lawler : $65,000
Herschel Walker: $5,000 (no win bonus)
def. Scott Carson: $5,000
Roger Gracie: $75,000 (no win bonus)
def. Trevor Prangley: $30,000
Nate Moore: $4,000 ($2,000 win bonus)
def. Nathan Coy: $3,000
Isaiah Hill: $3,000 ($1,500 win bonus)
def. Bobby Stack: $1,500
Ron Keslar: $3,000 ($1,500 win bonus)
def. Eric Lawson: $1,500
Germaine de Randamie: $3,000 ($1,000 win bonus)
def. Stephanie Webber: $1,000
James Terry: $3,000 ($1,500 win bonus)
def. Lucas Gamaza: $1,500
Jenna Castillo: $3,000 ($1,500 win bonus)
def. Charlene Gellner: $1,000
Now, the usual disclaimer: The figures do not include deductions for items such as insurance, licenses and taxes. Additionally, the figures do not include money paid by sponsors, which can oftentimes be a substantial portion of a fighter's income.
The figures also do not include the results from the night's three amateur bouts. (Amateur fighters are not compensated.)
In other words, these are simply base salaries reported to the commission and do not represent the total amounts earned by each fighter.

Looks like he makes what Jake makes without having to win
Food is expensive.
Organic food is expensive
Wasn't he still bitching about his pay VERY recently?
Please sign me up to make $150+k.
BTW, why did Trevor Prangley make $10,000 more than Cyborg, who was main eventing?
I wonder what sort of manager fee Caesar is taking

if memory serves me right the top UFC champions make 250-400 per fight. Coker said postfight Nick was their most popular fighter and got the fighter of the year award. If nick is comparing his salary to those in the UFC it would make him bitch about pay.. (insert he could have signed with UFC comment) now 150k is not a small paycheck but if his peers are making 50-75% more than that, i can see him bitching about getting paid.
glupe - cyborg only gets 20 thousand to Diaz' 150. Kinda tells you right there that the fight is lopsided. But then again James toney made something like 250k or 500k for fighting couture lol.
Like Brocks pay to Carwin? talk about lopsided...

Nick is the type of guy to win 100 million in the lottery and complain about paying taxes.
Does Nick go for a different car or just a newer honda?
I get that he's not making what the top UFC guys make but that's because -- my god -- he's not in the UFC anymore.
Maybe if he wouldn't have lost three straight fights in the UFC, he'd be a top guy there.
I'm not saying he isn't a top fighter now but you can't expect to make the same amount of money in Strikeforce as you would in the UFC.

ZugZug - This guy is such an isufferable douche. Every time he gets a mic he's bitching about something.
You can't see how he's a victim??? It's everyone elses fault but his own.
Diaz is his own worse enemy. If he doesn't like the pay then why re-sign with SF lol? It's a nice touch really....get all locked in with an org that has basically no top talent THEN complain about money and show a willingness to "fight anybody". Convenient? Of course not.
After the fight Scott Coker told Ariel Helwani that now Nick Diaz can buy a new car, a new house, and whatever else he wants. For $150,000, before taxes and expenses? How much does a house cost in Stockton? I can assure that $150,000 won't buy you a house in San Jose. Maybe he was referring to down payments?

I realize that $150,000 is a lot of money, but I always get a laugh when guys like Coker or DW exaggerate to make their companies look more righteous. .
ZOMG $1500 for fighters?!?!?! WTF COKER NEEDS TO PAY THE FIGHTERS MOOOOOOOOOAAAAAARRRRRR!!!!
sunderground -
Let's run the numbers. Its not a much money for a champion or a top 10 fighter.
$150k gross pay.
Subtract the following:
Cesar's cut - $45k
Costs for corner (travel, meals, etc) - $2k
Taxes (CA, Fed, SSI) - $30k
Net income from Strikeforce Title defence = $70,000
The guy fights about three times a year. He has to cover all travel costs, healthcare, retirement contributions (which he should be maxing rather than being taxed). He may be making alot to some on this but to me, he's not making much at all for being as good as he is and being the headliner on a Showtime broadcast.
And before you start saying "he makes money from endorsements!", go try to buy a Nick Diaz T-shirt or tell me one signficant sponsor he has that would pay him more than $10k a year.
I doubt Cesar takes 30%. Doesn't Strikeforce cover travel and meals for cornermen?
diaz is underpaid for the eyeballs he brings to strikeforce-brand events. people are not tuning in to look at the legends teeth. there's more lettuce caught in his braces than diaz gets. cmon coker pay yer champ
yes he can complain that he doesnt make as much as the top guys in the UFC, but he could have jumped ship by now and tried to get that money where the top welters fight. I like listening to his quotes but dont go bitching that you drive a honda when you make a half million a year. if it wasnt for fighting this guy would be swinging a mop instead of gloves.
prolly 70k after taxes and other shit
