Anyone here do dips? I've read dips being refered to as upper-body squats. They definitely give you a great feeling in the pecs. How many can you do both with and without added weight and did you see results?
They are a great exercise, no doubt. I don't know if I can even do 1 right now though. :-(
If Dips are the upper body squat, pullups are the upper body deadlift.
Agreed on both counts. Weighted dips and weighted pullups are 2 of the best lifts you can possibly do, imo.
If you guys want to really crank up the intensity on dips and chins buy a pair of Power Rings.
Very, very humbling, especially for the dips. I can do 5-6 right now on the rings, and I can crank out 30+ dips on parallel bars. The effort of stabilizing the rings is killer.
I can still crank out 10-12 chins on them, and my max is 15-16 on a regular chin bar...so not that bad. Still tough though!
When you guys do dips are your dip bars parallel to each other or does the gap between them widen the further out the bars get?
the reason i ask is that my gym has dip bars attached to the (assisted) pull ups station. But the bars are not parallel. This has led to me feeling the exercise far more in my shoulders than chest. In fact, i stopped doing them because I felt my shoulders were getting wrecked doing the exercise. I tried changing body position to emphasise my chest more but I'd stil feel it in my shoulders more than anywhere else.
Anyone else have this problem? Any solutions?
I love dips. I've done 5x15 without weight, and a set of 8 with 50lbs on a belt. They were a staple of my workouts for a while, and I felt like I was getting good results in terms of both size and strength.
I use a somewhat limited range of motion (upper arms just parallel to the ground at the bottom of the dip) because I end up with shoulder problems otherwise. I also have to keep my elbows tight to my sides; the "chest" version with elbows out wide wrecks my shoulders too.

weighted dips are a staple of my workouts....outstanding they are
TTT for dips
Power Rings are cool looking gear but a little pricey if you are cheap like me.
I made a set of rings using instructions I found on the messageboard at crossfit.com. I had the webbing and tape all ready so all I had to buy was 5' of 1" (inner diameter) PVC pipe.

Filling the pipe with sand prior to heating is very important.
Ring dips kick the arse right off parallel bar dips. Ring dips better prepare you for muscle-ups as well. (I can't do muscle-ups yet)
Yeah, I am far too lazy for that. So I just ponied up the money.
I am gonna invest in some rings as soon as I get good enough at dips and especially PU's. Maybe one day in the far future I will be able to do a muscle up which is a good combo of the two. After yesterday's CF WOD, I know I'm a looong way off.
Yeah, I had to do a Muay Thai class in the evening, so I had an excuse to skip...lol...that one looked like it sucked ass, and the one before with the 10 muscle up/clean combo was far too humbling.
