Well, boxing IS super weak right now, and his boxing and boxing-related skills and attributes are the best thing he has going for him... Usually I lol at mma guys that say this kind of thing, but it might not be a completely terrible move for him as long as he gets matched up carefully. He's not ever going to be the champ, but that's not happening in mma, either.
