I buy it, I really do, but I can't find a legit source. Learn me.

"There is some kind of superhuman strength that men get at the moment
they have their first child. I don?t exactly understand why but somehow
dad?s have something I have always thought of as ?old man strength.?
When I was a kid, no matter how fast I got or how many weights I lifted it
always seemed like my dad was still slightly faster and slightly stronger. I
could have beat him in the bench press or in number of pounds lifted but
he just had this practical strength that I never could quite match."

If you've ever grappled with an experienced 40 + grappler you'd understand.

I'm certainly not saying I don't believe it, I just want to know the facts.

after grappling i understand... me 2 years ago would be just as confused.

So Lawdy, 'splain Skip's strength changes over the years. Would be
perfect and might be the best way to answer my question. Thanks so
much.

Retarded Old Dad Strength is even worse.

I know there's some blowhard ready to answer this with logic. But I
appreciate anecdotes.

i'm 40 and i've had a couple of guys i was training with say that i have old man strenght. don't know what the hell it means, to me most of the guys feel stronger.

I just had my first kid 2 months ago and I feel stronger.  I think half of it is that the body adapts to carrying around 10-20 lbs during the day.  kinda like that old story where the guy carried the newborn calf to the market every day until it was full grown, then he carried the full grown bull to the market to sell it.  The other half is mental, like you have to be stronger because someone else's life depends on you, like the mom who lifted the car off her baby, only all day every day (and not as much)

essentially, you see a scrawny old man, his sinewy arms and legs seem weak, his pepper hair shows his age and lulls you into a sense of false security. You roll with him.... WTF old man strength...

he just never quits - not content to get fat (easy to do with my cooking) and be a couch potato (we watch fights, boxing & Dexter).  He's always doing something physical (which probably explains his muscles staying in tune) and while I'd surely like to see him "retire" from fighting;  I don't really have a problem with him continuing to fight.  But the best thing to come out his still fighting status is that he stays pretty much fight ready.  At 63 still does cardio 1-2 times a day (not 15 minutes but at least an hour at a time), as a personal trainer he works out with most of his clients and he does power lifting 4-5 days a week.  All of which are great for anyone but especially those of us getting older - proven to help with aging.

But do guys that don't fight train still have this? - alot do.  I don't know, maybe it's just a "Man Thing".  Maybe it has something to do with "here honey, open this; fix this"  "dad can do anything" to where as most of the breadwinners, heads of the household, "just wait til your dad gets home" stereotypes that you're always filling those big shoes and doing more than most think about.  I also think alot of men get a workout without ever setting foot in a gym.  It's working more than full time, it's doing whatever it takes to take care of their families - working on cars, doing yard work, fixing things around the house.  Much like the burdens that Skip has always shouldered - most husbands & fathers just stay active.   Maybe I'm just full of shit because you see this "old man strength" in bachelors too.

Lawdy, Ken, I like those explanations. Good show.

Here's a bit:

"i'm 40 and i've had a couple of guys i was training with say that i have old man strenght."

I am 44 and hear the same thing from the young guys I train with.

Is Old Man Strength soon to be a thing of the past though?

With technological advances, our lives get easier with every generation, creating an army of old, fat IT guys.

gyms and working out are more common and encouraged today more than ever too.  lm
