Taking my first BJJ class today, hella excited about it but a little unsure of what to do.
If it's my first class, am I allowed to go for subs and sweeps and shit? Or should I just concentrate on what ever it is that he teaches me in the first class?
I don't want to go in there and get a flukey sub and they all think I'm a douche, what's the correct etiqutee for newbie?
What you want to do is look up some leg locks... Jiu Jitsu guys aren't as good at defending them. Heel Hooks are probably the best move. Just fall back for heel hooks and you should do pretty good. Also any time you are in guard if the heel hook looks hard to do go for a can opener (look it up on youtube) For the first few months you want to just work those moves.

What about neck cranks and finger locks? Should I use those too?

yes. wrist locks and compression also. just try not to use the word 'hella' while you are in the dojo.
You probably won't roll that much at first. If you do it should be with higher belts. Working on the daily move is a good idea. You'll probably spend most of your time learning balance.
don't try to be super strong and gas yourself. also try not to spaz out
one word: pressure points

wrist locks are kind of hard to get. just grab one or two fingers and twist/bend them backwards. this also works with toes.

In Nor Cal if you don't use 'hella' people will know you're a spy from some other school.
Be sure to ask Eddie for your purple shirt and start making online instuctionals STAT!!.
Just got back, was awesome.
Was only a small class, about 10 guys so was really hands on. They were working passing from the butterfly guard, so I was a little bit confused at first.
Didn't get to roll which is understandable but had fun anyway, BJJ is awesome.

I hate to break it to you but you're probably not going to roll at all.
Bring some pain pills.
Randy Bloom - Bring the pain.
Biggest advice would be to : LISTEN and not pretend you know what you're doing just because you've watched some UFC fights. I've met the occasional newb who comes in and thinks they know everything, refuses to listen to the teacher or do the lesson we're being taught And then they decide to wrap things up by smashing me with whatever sub they think they know because I'm a female and a) either they don't think I belong there or b) they want to impress me. One new guy nearly dislocated my shoulder by drilling ALL of his 250 pounds into my joint socket leaving my only defense to sweep and mount him, over and over and over. I'm sure that was great for his ego. Don't think I saw him again. Also, wear a fresh gi every time you roll, focus on what you're being taught, and don't muscle your way through the techniques. This is a leverage based art. And please.... keep it real. No Hollywood MMA tough guy BS. You'll do fine.
lmao ferocity you have it tough!

lol
Rock 'N Roll... this quote thing won't work on my computer for some reason... Normally, everything is wonderful where I train. But once in a while newbs can be a tough bunch... too much strength and force and believing they know more than the Gracies or Jordan or John or Brent (some of my teachers) and it's their FIRST class. LOL!
