For everyone who wasted their time with BJJ, would you go back in time and take Sambo if offered?

Jourdain is a BJJ BB.

Yeah Charles is a beast.

He trains under BTT Fabio Hollanda if i spelt it right. The Kimura king. He was GSPs first BJJ coach.

Charles is better in every way than Keon except on the ground.

Iā€™ll be betting on Charles.

Thanks for the heads up

Also, BJJ is probably the easiest of the three major arts to nullify IMO

Iā€™m in Canada. Any suggestions on where to bet?

Theyā€™re all pretty easy to nullify if nullification is the goal.

BJJ is just the only one where the rules and scoring allow nullification to not only occur but be scored as effective offense

I suppose but its much harder to stop good wrestling or a good striker. Take Kron this weekend, heā€™s going to get smashed.

The throws are similar but many are different. I have a BB in Judo and Candidate to Master of Sport in Sambo. I trained both and still do use in my BJJ training. They are similar but different.

Nice! BB in BJJ as well?

In my entire martial arts lif I donā€™t think you can possibly waste any time if youā€™re in a bjj class.

I think gi is so technical that itā€™s still gold to an mma fighter. Mind you I just couldnā€™t grasp all the tricks of ghr gi.

Breaking grips and arms apart in no-gi became so much easier.

Evolution. Sambo is taking over but itā€™s sambo with bjj. Sambo just flows everything together a little nicer.

Yes 2 stripes currently- 51 years young :grinning:

Practicing all 3 here is my take.

Sambo has great throws and some really nice subs. The problem is there is no guard . Bad positions and lack of ability to avoid and reverse without dynamic moves. Leg locks in modern BJJ are light years ahead in my opinion. Sambo in summary great stand up but the ground work is lacking . BJJ stand up is meh ground work tends to be much better.
There are always exceptions to both

Nice commentary. It feels like no gi BJJ stand up is taking some big leaps but itā€™s only because it was lagging so far behind. Lots of really good grapplers from wrestling coming into no gi is really helping out the game overall. Even beyond takedowns wrestling has excellent techniques from scrambles and various positions where BJJ is lacking.

If you asked me what I think the best martial art is for fighting - hands down wrestling. Most BJJ schools who have a new student with a pedigree in wrestling I would say 90% of the gym is in trouble after 1/2 year - 70 % right away. High caliber wrestling consists of great physical and mental training. The wrestler typically controls where the fight goes and stays. Look at UFC itā€™s the wrestlerā€™s dominating the sport

I didnā€™t know this, from Wikipedia:

The word sambo is an acronym of samozashchita bez oruzhiya (Russian: сŠ°Š¼Š¾Š·Š°Ń‰ŠøтŠ° Š±ŠµŠ· Š¾Ń€ŃƒŠ¶Šøя), which literally translates to ā€˜self-defence without weaponsā€™

A guy who teaches wrestling at a MMA gym here in Austin just started no gi bjj maybe 18 months ago and he just won a local level tournament in the black belt division. Heā€™s built like a fucking tank and moves like a gazelle. He was an academic all american in division 2, a high school state champ wrestler, and a all state football player.

Agree that wrestling is the #1 best background. I have only trained jiu jitsu and stand up and very little wrestling and while I like jiu jitsu the most, feel striking is easiest, wrestling was the hardest but also the most important. My jiu jitsu is shit if he is equal or better at striking and a better wrestler than me. My striking is shit if his jiu jitsu (especially his defensive jiu jitsu from top) is enough to nullify my jiu jitsu, and he is a better wrestler than me.

sambo is just limited wrestling and limited bjj. very few people have ever combined the whole arts. maybe nobody now that i think about it. has an all american wrestler ever gone balls deep in bjj and brought it to mma?

that i would like to see. with some muay thaiā€¦ guys gonna be 45 before he makes his debut.
