I have trained both Sambo & BJJ and have high rank in both. Both arts are effective for self defense and fighting . It is a mixture of schools and the individual that makes it work or not. I have found killers and wimps in both
You realize that grappling is grappling and that all grappling arts train takedowns? You act like bjj is always the guard. It is not. I wrestled d1 and my second bjj coach was hell on the feet. He did things awkwardly and had a hell of a clinch game. He had trained with Greco world champions that outweighed him. His goal was to get it to the ground and he always did one way or another. At Tinguinha’s school we trained throws daily. How many sambo leg locks have won UFC matches vs bjj subs?
Yes because they are from Russia. I trained with only Russians for a few years. Those years were miles ahead of the American group I Initially trained Sambo with. I have to imagine anywhere in America where you have a cluster of Russians you could find legit Sambo
the days of BJJ schools teaching flopping to your ass are long gone Every BJJ school will tell u to try to get top position in a fight. But if ur on bottem u know what to do in any and all positions But there are times when u fight a bigger better fighter But BJJ will teach u what to do in any position And also any BJJ school will teach u how to break a fall and not get slammed.I trained at Serras for 7 years and we had guys from all arts train there including many good wrestlers who developed into good BJJers Ive also seen very good wrestlers come in thinking they will dominat first day and get their ass kicked ( every single time ) But if good wrestler comes in with a good attitude they will be welcomed and do well.Personally I hated rolling with a good wrestler even though i came from wrestling background
also most important thing i was tought in BJJ is awareness.I saw Jack post a BJJ guy will get slammed into the concrete Well Im from NY and we have great BJJ teachers and I can gaurentee 100 percent of my teamates where Ive trained if fought on concrete it would be the first thing they took into account.I leanred a lot about BJJ from Matt Serra and his teachers all super. Not only BJJ techniques but why and most important situation awareness.I can gaurentee any purple belt or higher is 100 percent more versed than the average JOe And to say BJJ does not work in a fight just shows hes never been in a fight.Knowing BJJ can save your ass and destroy the average Joe That said first thing learned is no matter how goods ur BJJ is or how bad u think u are u can still get ur ass kicked But Ill take my chances with BJJ and good wrestling.also most BJJ schools incorperate good leglocks and escapes Ive also NEVER seen a guy from my school lose a street fight as a matter of fact every single one i saw from my BJJ school and or wrestling team prior absolutely destroyed the average meathead Joe
No shit but it’s only a small piece of the puzzle in current MMA. Having basic sub defence is a prerequisite at high levels of MMA, but otherwise the role of BJJ’s importance in MMA is diminishing.
And from a hand to hand self defence point of view it’s also only a small part of a much bigger picture as well. With BJJ alone someone would still stand a good chance of getting their ass handed to them in a self defence altercation.
Judging by your post you have never been to a half decent Bjj school and never rolled with a good bjjer.ive trained at Renzos and Serras and every stident is versed from all positions in a fight .it’s laughable u think s bjjer is just going to get slammed on concrete.to say that proved u have never entered a bjj school.no we don’t punch in bjj practice but we are aware of situations we’re u can punch or be punched a good bjjrr is also versed in good wrestling and good awareness and street smarts.
