I think it was the American Sambo Association who also did a BJJ vs Sambo event like 10 years ago. The results were pretty one sided in favor of BJJ as well. I think it was in the Bay Area.
–Maybe if you studied a martial art instead of just fantasizing about them, you would have a more nuanced opinion based on something real.
You realize it comes down to the individual right? Also these Sambo guys are incorporating aspects of Wrestling and striking which are not Sambo. Just like BJJ guys will add Muy Thai- think Chute Box .
We’re going in circles here because BJJ guys don’t want to admit that Combat Sambo is the better, more versatile, more comprehensive martial art that focuses on submissions, wrestling and striking as opposed to just submissions. This is not rocket science.
While the fan had asked a very valid question,Gordon Ryan also took the effort to give an elaborate answer.Ryan replied, ““*Sambo guys” are more well-equipped to wrestle under a MMA rule set. Meaning they dominate the pace and direction of the fight, end on top. And make their opponents carry body weight, forming a discrepancy in the work rate that leads to fatigue over time"
He admitted it.
Gordon Ryan betrayed the BJJ community or he’s on to something.
I don’t get in street fights often but the last one 3 years ago, ended with jiu jitsu. Started on the feet, and the uppercut I landed when he tried to take me down felt awesome, but no where near as awesome when I ended up in side mount with a keylock on his right arm and after some short elbows landed I was able to ask the guy if he would like to apologize or wipe his ass with his left hand the next few weeks.
Knowing the other guy was the aggressor/instigator and now was apologizing, felt fucking sweet.
A wrestler can takesomeone down and subdue them, but that’s about it. A striker can ko someone, but the other guy can always say “lucky punch”. The guy I fought, the only thing he could say was “911 send police I was just assaulted”.
