Anyone have hints on working up to free standing hand stand p/us? I can do 6-8 now against a wall, but dont have the balance to do them away from the wall.
I know that practice makes perfect, but anyone have hints or tips to help me on the learning curve?
Thanks for any info!
Check out beastskills.com he has loads of helpful progressions. You have to be able to hold a free handstand for at least half a minute or so before you'll have a shot at a pushup
JUST what i was looking for, thanks mate!
Just practice sticking a good handstand. When you get them good with the right palm balance and body positioning, you'll feel almost weightless. Thats when you can start fucking around with push ups or planches.
duh just be an olympic gymnast
seriously tho what benefit do they have being done free hand vs against a wall
^^^^
I've always thought of it as analogous to free weights vs. machines 9or even more specific, ring dips vs. bar dips); having to stabilize yourself makes it a more challenging exercise.
There's probably not much of a difference in range of motion, but I usually find I have to contract harder when the load is unstable.
handstand push ups are a whole different breed of exercise tho, if you can do them at all youre pretty strong. against a wall or in the middle of a floor i really dont think it matters much and some people just don't have the best balance or ability to do it freestanding. if you want some extra load to the movement do them using handles so you go a bit further down past where your head would normally touch the floor
