Why would they go with a less popular sport? That wouldn't make any sense.
Boxing is more relatable as being a sport of underdogs. A picture of a single individual overcoming all odds and taking on the world. You have 30 years of Rocky movies to thank for that. With other sports you have teammates offering the protagonist support, but in boxing, it's just two guys in the ring. Rudy wasn't on the football field all by himself, but it was always Rocky Balboa staring down Apollo Creed or Clubber Lang or Ivan Drago. Sure he had people in the corner and fans cheering him on, but it all came down to just two men in the ring throwing leather.
Maybe in the future after MMA has become more mainstream and accepted, we'll see a Lights Out of MMA, but right now, it doesn't have the widespread exposure, appeal and history that boxing does.

Stallone did more for boxing then Michael Jackson did for MMA or the UFC at that.
The problem seems to be that everyone on this thread is talking about this show, but few have actually seen it.
Terriers was a very good show, imo. But no one watched it. That's why it's off the air.
Liking or not liking "Lights Out" because it has boxing in it seems to be pretty dumb. That's like not liking Terriers because it had a dog in it.

The OP taught me that FX canceled Terriers. Lame. I liked that show.
I don't know if actual boxing is dead but Hollywood boxing is. Lights Out and The Fighter got great reviews, I liked both of them, but Lights Out did disappointing ratings and The Fighter was never top 3 at the box office. People can only stomach the "boxing comeback story" where every boxing scene is a defenseless slugfest so many times.
That's why I'm going to make a boxing show where the main character is a boring defensive fighter. The fans will turn against him but he won't have brain damage later in life nor will he need to make some dramatic comeback because he's broke. It's going to be called "Jab, Parry, and Cover."

They would make this show without Boxing and instead use MMA as a story line and people would still bitch. Watch the show and enjoy it!

Right on to this..........Boxing truly is a sweet science. If you cant appreciate a GOOD boxing match then you dont belong around combat sports.
