you can watch Cesar Gracie awarding Jake Shields his gracie bjj black belt on youtube. Jake's style of bjj is what he calls American Jiu-Jitsu. It's a blend of american wrestling & no-gi bjj, which is better suited for MMA fighting in his opinion. Basically, its just more aggressive bjj and top game because of the 5-minute round time limits for MMA fights, as opposed to taking your time & being patient... waiting for you opponent to make a mistake like traditional gi-bjj. Ajj is designed to force you opponent into mistakes that lead to subs or into bad positions where you can land effective strikes or finish fights with ref stoppages,etc.

It's no different than Helio taking Judo ground fighting and developing the art in a different direction and calling it Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Who gave Helio his Black Belt in BJJ? As the story goes he didn't even have a black belt in Judo, so where did the authority come from for him to start promoting and ranking? You guys are ridiculous.

I think if Jake can find a way to be successful in getting the fight to the ground, he has a chance. I think it'll be tough to sub GSP, so he may need to get a TD in all 5 rounds to get a dec and avoid getting KTFO. That's an awfully big if. I just don't see him being able to do that through the course of 5 rounds given GSP's TD defense.

Shields trains with Kos and Askren regularly. Jake is able to take Ben down, is Kos better than Ben @ wrestling? What BJJ Black Belts has GSP defeated? Alves and Serra, who are both off the back BJJ guys. Shields is a top wrestler it will make the difference.
