Gomi-Aurelio fight (SPOILER)

I thought Gomis comments before the fight were interesting

PRIDE Lightweight GP champion Takanori Gomi, on March 29th, invited the media to his practice session at Kiguchi Dojo in Machida, Tokyo. Gomi was supposed to spar for five minutes but instead he only rolled around for just three minutes. Gomi is aware that his opponent, Marcus Aurelio, likes to snap on the triangle and armbar from the bottom. So, in this sparring, Gomi repeated follow up moves, escapes from triangle or armbar, then pounding and stomping from the top.

Gomi looked sharp but at the same time, he seems like he was suffering from a stuffy nose and also, he was constantly mumbling, 'It's hot.' One reporter asked him 'Did you catch a cold?' Gomi replied, 'It's been warm these days so after practice, I was a bit careless, but it's not that big of a deal. Just a nose, it's not like I have a fever or anything.'

He denied any physical problem but what about his mental state? 'Sometime, I feel down, or get bored with myself, thinking negative, but on the day of the fight, when I watch other fighters battling in the ring, I can't be saying such a thing. Before the Main Even, I think I will get back to my normal mode.'

It is uncharacteristic for Gomi to make such bare remarks. On top of this, when other reporter asked him about plans of opening his own dojo, 'Right now, I am in the best environment, but I do get bored easily, especially after ten years or so, I also do need a change. Should I train at a different gym to get stimulated? Or should I stay in the same place? I think this fight will give me that answer.'

In fact, Gomi hired this jiu-jitsu fighter to prepare for this fight but this jiu-jitsu fighter got injured so he really couldn't work on detailed tactics against another jiu-jitsu fighter so he may be feeling a bit worried. 'I don't think I am feeling flat. But it is after I achieved my goal. It would be great if I could discover something new in this fight.'

bj syndrome?

It was a non title fight. You know like Royce-Hughes?

Even your master has those

why is this bullshit? he won fair and square using textbook bjj

amazing.

GOMI will win the title rematch.

He probably lost motivation because he reached the apex of his division.

No excuses tho. Aurelio is good... but I think GOMI will only improve after this devestating loss.

i agree, i think gomi will win the rematch

Aurelio is too inconsistent and not dominant enough to be the LW champ IMO.

Kawajiri, Sakurai would still handle him easily. Aurelio could not even handle Jutaro Nakao recently.

In addition, Gomi will still be the favorite to win a rematch.

Aurelio is definitely hot property right now though.

I dont think its coincidence that all of Gomis losses came from fighters with BJJ as their main style

"I dont think its coincidence that all of Gomis losses came from fighters with BJJ as their main style "

GOMI is vulnerable to chokes.. for some odd reason.

He really needs to work on it if he wants to stay at the top of the LW division.

Hansen got his back and almost choked him.. and BJ and now Aurelio both did it successfully.

BJJ is gomi's kryptonite.

Kryptonite is supposed to be rare though. Like something in Lex Luther's secret lock box.

You can find BJJ on the average store shelf when you go shopping for MMA fighters.

Hopefully he can come up with an antidote in the lab.

everybody gets caught it is just a matter of time, Gomi is still amazing, can't wait to see this Bushido

Mato

"everybody gets caught it is just a matter of time, Gomi is still amazing, can't wait to see this Bushido "

yep. even Crocop lost to randleman.. although a KO loss is more flukish than a SUB loss.

i'm confident that GOMI will come back even stronger after this.

However I am not as confident about Kondo making a comeback.. his career seems to be pretty much over at this point.

we'll see though. If Baroni manages to beat Henderson and Silva.. then Kondo's loss won't look as bad.

ATT ....ATT......ATT

OSu......

Good fight for Aurelio. Didn't let Gomi's mount a good stand up attack, and when he got him in reach, he took him down with a double leg.

and knowing of Marcus' ability through Jorge.G, i'm sobbing now thinking of how much $ I KNEW i should've put on maximus..

" stop coasting on flash KO's"

lol @ flash KO's. Is that what you call it when a guy lands dozens of brutally hard shots to his opponent's head and puts him down?

Evil Yoshida, does this now drop Gomi out of your P4P #1? Does Fedor move up or does another Japanese fighter take the top spot?

Are you still claiming that Gomi is more skilled than Fedor, even though Gomi was choked unconscious within a minute of being taken down? What did Gomi do when decent ground fighter Azeredo took him down? Held on for dear life and waited for the ref to stand him up. What happened when Fedor was (finally) put on his back by one of the best submission fighters in the sport? He swept him in two seconds and resumed dominating.

Of course he'll be back -- he is still the champion, since for some unimaginable reason this was a non-title fight.

Marcus Aurelio is an amazing ground master and was a serious threat to gomi. It is absolutely crazy that this fight was not for the title.

TTT For the TRUE Pride Lightweight Champ,
Marcus Maximus Aurelio!

Maximus, Maximus, Maximus!!!!

Flash choke.

You cant determine much from this.

Familiar?
