Gunnar Nelson to appeal loss due to eye pokes

If ever a controversial result has been worth an appeal, Gunnar Nelson’s loss this past Sunday at the hands, or more specifically, fingers, of Santiago Ponzinibbio, is certainly one.

The welterweight pair collided this past weekend, headlining UFC Fight Night 113 at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland. Iceland’s Nelson (16-3-1) lost out to Ponzinibbio (25-3) via first round knockout. However, the 30-year-old Argentine’s fifth consecutive triumph has since come under scrutiny.

Nelson, aged 28, initially complained of eye pokes following the bout and the Mjölnir MMA team will likely announce an appeal this week with stirring evidence having been produced, conclusively showing a series of clear, reckless eye pokes of which significantly impaired the fighter’s vision during exchanges on the feet and in the climaxing seconds where a final poke lead to Nelson being unable to defend himself.

A total of four clear pokes can be counted, two in each eye and even including a double poke with two of Ponzinibbio’s extended fingers simultaneously striking both of Nelson’s eyes. The below video breaks down the bout, highlighting the numerous fouls. Judging by the footage, Nelson was fortunate to escape significant injury.

Furthermore, Ponzinibbio’s hand movements were a direct infringement of the recently introduced ‘Extended Fingers’ rule of which was introduced to the ABC’s Unified Rules of MMA this year in order to reduce eye pokes in competition.

“In the standing position, a fighter that moves their arm(s) toward their opponent with an open hand, fingers pointing at the opponent’s face/eyes, will be a foul. Referees are to prevent this dangerous behavior by communicating clearly to fighters. Fighters are directed to close their fists or point their fingers straight in the air when reaching toward their opponent.”

This should go over since the said a fighter with their hand extended  fingers pointing towards their opponent is against the rules.

I was on the "he really needs to get over it" wagon until I saw other threads pointing out with proof that ponzi basically always leads his right hand with a left hand thumbpoke/fingerslash.

He basically uses the old Chuck Liddell gameplan. Hate that shit ad hope it gets overturned.

Gunnar did get poked multipe times. I hope it gets reversed since there is no sense in having rules for them to get continously broken and the fighter breaking them not facing any repurcussions.

Hopefully it's true, wish Nelson all the best with it.

I'm sure the commission will look into this thoroughly and ensure a fair outcome.

Damn ponz was raping the shit out of his eyes, I don't usually agree with appeals but this one seems pretty reasonable.

Wow those eye pokes are blatant and brutal... I hate when fighters make excuses but I think Gunnar has point. I'm doubtful that anything will be reversed though.

Waste of time

Anyone know who the commission for the Glasgow event was?

Lol. This new gunner is a joke. He may need to just suck it up and start fighting without excuses. Come on man. Just fight.

Did you even see the video? The evidence is right in front of you. Ponzinibbio looked like he learned some of his striking from the 3 stooges.

I'm implying there is no Glasgow mma commission so the UFC oversaw the event as the commission.

I shit you not when I tell you I was doing BJJ, and while protecting my neck from an RNC my hand slipped and I thumbed myself in the eye.

HOLY FUCK it hurt.

Recap:  I poked myself in the eye with my thumb and could barely handle it.

The UFC needs to step in and take away Santiagos performance bonus.

It will most likely not change. While the replays show that there was an eye poke, Gunnar was the one that kept pressing forward even after the poke that HE says blurred his vision.

I get it, looking back in hindsight he says he SHOULD have said something for the fight to be paused. But he didnt because he thought he had Ponzi on the run. Had he go the W he wouldnt have complained about the eye poke.

The fact remains that he kept pressing forward even AFTER the eye poke and was caught with his hands low and chin up.

The last eye poke to the left eye while Gunnar was against the cage is one of the most blatant ones I have ever seen.  The way he stuck his index finger in the eye and then pulled it across the eye looked like it was meant to cause maximum damage.  I'm sure that was not the full intention but that is how it looked to me.
