How did akiyama lose?

He stuffed all his takedowns for the first two rounds, landed his own spectacular throws AND hit shields with the more significant strikes on the feet.

Got outstruck handily.

He had nice throws but didn't get on top. Doesn't score much points.

He lost by getting repeatedly punched in the face and kicked in the body.

Wasn't a great fight for either guy.

It seems when Shields wins he either picks up a quick sub or looks awful in a decision win.

Unbelievably he got out struck. Shields looks so awkward striking but he uses his length well. Phone Post

Shields landed nearly 3x more significant strikes, he was taken down but got up before Akiyama even got on top, and he was FAR more active.

I don't know how anyone can say Akiyama won.

it was a shitty decision. Lol at people who think quantity wins fights alone... same kind of idiots they choose to be ufc judges

Shields won that fight and it was the right score.

He lost by doing nothing, like most of his UFC fights.

I thought Akiyama won too. I feel that if Shields hasn't scored a takedown in a round, then he lost it. It's not that I think defense and octagon control should carry weight. I don't. They are at best tiebreakers in my eyes because they inflict no pain or discomfort to the opponent. But if you're fighting stand-up against Shields, he's doing zero damage to you. Even his Bully Beatdown opponent was yawning at him. Akiyama landed the only power strikes in the first two rounds that occurred. I was pretty stunned at the judge's scores.

He stuffed take downs and had a couple nice throws, other than that he did absolutely nothing. Shields basically won every round.

He absolutely should have had a point taken away for blatant, multiple fence grabs. It should have been scored a draw with that in mind, IMO.

Akiyama let Shields hit him a lot with awkward looking strikes and offered little in return other than a couple throws.

Shields striking is bad but its getting better especially his muay thai , I can see Shields developing a decent striking game someday. Phone Post

HRT is a mother fucker I can see Shields fightung another 8-10 years Ala Hendo Couture. Phone Post

This. Shields might have looked awkward as shit but he did a great job with using his jab and landing lots of good kicks to the body.

Also remember in the 3rd Shields took him down and got his back even despite Sexyama repeatedly grabbing the fence.

I thought Akiyama looked very good and actually could have gotten the decision. The bottom line is that Shields' whole gameplan was to take him down and got stuffed constantly. Shields' striking was nothing special (as usual) and he didn't hurt Akiyama. Akiyama had some stand-out moments and Shields' mainly just plodded along and could never impose his game.

Akiyama could have gotten that decision. He won rounds 1 & 2. Several sites had it scored this way. One thing is for sure, there is NO WAY Shields should have won all 3 rds. Crazy.
