How GSP Can Be Beat (Pay Attention, Hardy) :P

I believe that the best gameplan should be to fight him similarly to the way Couture fought Vera - keep closing the distance FAST and pressure him against the fence. As you have him against the fence (you must work on this diligently), be sure to fake takedown attempts and instead land short bludgeoning elbows, and if possible, knees. Basically, what you want to do is nullify his striking and wrestling while at the same time frustrating him to the point of fatigue. I would train with someone like Couture, Lindland, or Velasquez (he's also great this game) leading up to a GSP fight. I know many people believe that they can outstrike him, but it is just too risky. And even if you can, he will double-leg you into oblivion anyway, so why not cut the ring off and close the distance so that you keep pressing him against the fence? Just my opinion. Agree? Disagree? I'm an idiot?

Pressure against the fence and only move back to fire off bombs. Rinse and repeat.

 ITS BRILLIANT!

BRB GOING TO BE UFC SUPERSTAR STARTING TOMORROW

Closing the distance will result in him getting taken down repeatedly.

Not that it won't happen anyway, but this strategy would just speed up the process.

i think your right as far as what has even a chance of beating GSP... that being said, with his strength, athleticism and overall ability being what it is....

Hardy's fucked.

He won't KO GSP. And if he will, it's because he implemented my gameplan beforehand. ;)

Monsters Ball - Kos, I think that would be a good idea if Hardy had some Greco background. Otherwise he is just giving up his punching range to put himself into GSP's world.
Well yeah, man, I realize he won't be ready to apply such a strategy by Saturday but if he had been training for this gameplan since the beginning of his camp with the appropriate said fighters then I believe he would be much more equipped to beat GSP. As it stands, I do not see him taking away the belt. Again, just my two cents.

Very insightful thread

NOT!!!!!

^ This suit is grey?

Kos is still the only 170er I see having much shot.

Paulo Thiago in a 5-rounder could conceivably pull it off; he seems like he'd be very hard to stop, and that's a long time to give him a chance to land something standing or pull off a sub on the ground.

I think to beat him he has to outwrestle GSP. I would agree training with Couture, Lindland and Cain would help greatly to achieve this.

Hardy would have to go for explosive takedowns like Kos did.

gsp can also be dazed by a punch that misses when the forearm hits the back of his head

Ugh. C'mon, this is getting old. If it weren't for the fact that Serra was owning GSP on the feet BEFORE the alledged "illegal/lucky" strike, this argument would have some sort of validity.

By the way, the only person I see beating GSP right now is actually Matt Serra. They're 1-1 now.

yeah, coming in with a strategy to wrestle with the wrestler is probably not a good idea; at least not for Hardy. IMO GSP does not need to start shooting doubles to take him down. In fact, correct me if I am wrong since you are the wrestling coach after all :), but I'd say it'd be easier/less-risky for GSP to take him down from the clinch.

Hardy's best bet, IMO, would have been to taunt him through the media about how questionable his stand-up is etc. and hope that he will bite; at least for a minute or two in the fight. Even then though, GSP would be a clear favorite.

Hardy is in all kinds of trouble in this one.

Giorgios, we know that GSP's best offense is his striking and wrestling (mostly double-legs), so that is why I feel that someone should challenge his clinch-work, something we've seen almost nothing of. Again, press him against the cage with constant pressure, takedown attempts, and elbows... just enough to fatigue him a bit so that his explosivity is drained. And if you think that Hardy is a better striker than GSP, I hope you are not a betting man. ;)

put all ur money on GSP I dont care what the odds are

it's completely irrelevant. GSP is better than hardy everywhere.

Hardy's only chance is to go slugging and hope for a lucky pop.

"Its pretty silly how much people are overlooking Hardy. I see this is as a 50/50 fight, I am not favoring anybody over the other but Hardy has a great chance to win this. Reveal."

LMAO!!!

hehe there is no way Hardy is a better striker than GSP. I just feel that his only chance is on the feet; albeit a small chance; i.e. land that over hand from nowhere kind of thing. The game plan you are describing is quite sound, it's just I don't think Hardy is the man to pull that off.

Hardy needs to swing for the fences...only shot he has imo.
