I just skimmed it, but my understanding is that it follows the concept of periodization, like Daniels and Lydiard have long recommended.

Build a good endurance base over a period of time, then transition to threshold work. Maintain previous base gains + increase in VO2 max with newly added speedwork, even w/reduced volume.

Maybe I should have read the study, but it appears there's nothing new under the same with me quick conclusions.

Good stuff, but not exactly news. Mature athletes with stable long term aerobic adaptions probably should focus mostly on tempo/interval work, but lots of newbs who jump right into the high-intensity will never develop a base.

It would be interesting to test a group that blended distance runs with speedwork.
