He was the champion, and then left for the sport for a bit. He never lost his title in a fight he was just sitting out. That’s the title Khabib and Al Iaquinta fought for because Ferguson ducked Khabib.
That’s because Conor was not the Champion when they fought. You were correct.
Conor won the UFC LW Belt at UFC 205 then was STRIPPED by the time Khabib fought… AL IAQUINTA for his Title… who was not a Champion.
And Conor was not the Champion when he Fought Khabib. He was out of the sport for almost 2 full years and was stripped of his Title and was coming off a KO loss in Boxing. Hardly peak MMA form yet he still won Round 3 against Khabib on all 3 judges scorecards at the time.

Charles earned his title by beating Micheal Chandler who was having his second ufc fight,
2-2 in the UFC.
