Is Florian supposed to be a a BJJ Black belt?

forgot his roots...needs to do less time practicing dirty elbows and work his bjj.

I heard BJ is heavy as fuck on the ground... constant pressure

caliphornia - just rewatched the penn/florian fight and as soon as BJ picked up kenny and threw him to the ground into half guard florian seemed to panic and have no idea what to do. he looked like a white belt once on the ground. anyone else notice that?
If that's what you thought was going on, you don't understand  grappling at all. Florian fought hard and well to fight the mount/pass. Florian has excellent jiu jitsu, he just isn't as good as Penn - who is a world champion jiu jitsu competitor.

+1. Kenny is a legit blackbelt... BJ is world class.

Which people can not understand unless they have grappled before.. and a guess is 3/4 of the forum has not..

what a lame ass topic....idiot

Of coarse he is legit but bj is a super blackbelt

caliphornia is a straight up moron...he OBVIOUSLY has never rolled or "traned" in his life

In any sport there are the top guys but within them there are the best guys....

Most lower belts cant tell the difference because they get smashed by all the top guys..... but within that group we all no the better guys..

Kenny is a legit very capable black belt in BJJ and no-gi.... its just that BJ is better.

To be honest you only need to be a bit better to make the other guy look bad.... once you seal the holes in your game where you were loosing you can give the guy a much better fight..... regardless of belt rank.

If you had to be as sick as Penn is to be a black belt, Kenny would probably still be wearing purple.

Carl Weathers - BJ's BJJ is Michael Jordan-esque wouldn't you say joe?

 LOL. Larry Bird?? Kobe Bryant?!

The reason Kenny looked dejected when BJ took him down was three-fold:

First, it was Kenny working and burning gas in takedown attempts the whole fight, never getting one, then boom, on BJ's first attempt, he slams Kenny.

Secondly, driving BJ into the fence was supposed to tire BJ out, but all that work and taking all those shots actually wore out Kenny.

So thirdly, BJ slams him on the first attempt, Kenny is now tired, and BJ is on TOP.

Takedown, starting to gas, and now BJ is on top. This was the look on Kenny's face when it hit the mat.

Then to make things worse, if Kenny has studied BJ at all, he knows BJ doesn't simply get a good position and look for a submission...once BJ gets an advantageous position, he looks to punish you before moving to an even better position, and on and on until he reaches your back. And even then, he's going to punish you before putting on the choke. He wants to make sure that by the time he puts the choke on, you don't have much life left in you to defend it.

I'm sure once they hit the ground and BJ was in top half guard, Kenny realized what was coming next and got depressed.

Exactly. Just 48 hours ago I was reading on every thread how Kenny was indeed better than Penn in every aspect and it's going to be a painful night for BJ. Now today all I hear is how Kenny sucks and was all hype.

Get it straight, Kenny is among the top three at 155 and is indeed highly skilled, has heart, a good mind, and the ability to put in the hard work, however, he is simply not at BJ's level.

caliphornia - but didn't kenny say he has better jiu jitsu than BJ and that he will beat him skill by skill, round by round?

What the hell do you expect him to say in the pre-fight hype ... "BJ is better than me and I really don't have much of a chance."?  Of course he is going to talk himself up.  There is no harm in that.

caliphornia - then why did he look like an amatuer as soon as it hit the ground

As others have said, BJ Penn can make a lot of blackbelts look like amateurs.  Also, let's not forget than Kenny had spent the last 16 minutes or so working his ass off trying to get a takedown.  I'm sure he was a little bit demoralized that BJ got him down instead and a very fatigued.

many brazilian blackbelts from brazil consider BJ penn's jiu jitsu the best bar none in mma. Kenny has nothing to be ashamed of.

TheClips - White belt? You've never trained a day in your life, have you?

You certainly are the trollish type, huh?

Dude, I believe he was using a metaphor of the hyperbole variety. Everybody just chill...

Fighters who are truly amazingly gifted at their specialty make everyone like the new guy in class. Part of what's needed to beat those is guys is to have the heart to a.)know that they look like a total bitch to everyone watching, and b.)stick it out anyway.

It's cool to see guys like Nog and BJ dominate guys with what looks like basic moves to most.

Glad we got to see the BJ at his best.

nostripewhite - If you had to be as sick as Penn is to be a black belt, Kenny damn near everybody would probably still be wearing purple.

Fixed

Check top notch grappler Scott Bieri's prediction of the fight on Sherdog...

"Both of these guys serve as examples of the evolution of this sport, [with] good skill sets in all areas. And Florian gets my vote for the most improved fighter; his run to this point has been amazing. Kenny can decision B.J. with his movement and striking. But the likely outcome is that Penn gets on top, passes to half guard, underhooks the pass side (his head is a counter balance on the mount side), stuffs the already smashed butterfly hook and steps to mount. From here, B.J. finishes fights. No one can seem to duplicate or defend this. Penn wins."
