lol reading this stuff you would have thought the fights took place in 1920. Man now I feel old and Mario did tap.lol
naderhood - I found a couple ol skool DVD's titled "Extreme Fighting". I'm watching the first one and it took place in Wilmington, North Carolina. Ralph Gracie fought in it as well as Mario Sperry. They are claiming Mario Sperry to be 272-0. I'm pretty sure thats bullshit no matter how they look at it because he's lost to some big namers in vale tudo and BJJ however this event took place in the early 90's judging by the amount of hairspray in the crowd and could've been before he lost.Damn you act like you found it stored away in your grandpappys attic or something. I watched that shit live like in 1994 or something. It was right after the UFC started up.
If its true, you would think he'd been mentioned up there with Rickson and some other legends but he doesnt get much atttention compared to others.
I mean, we all know that to be legendary you have to be at least 4-2 right.....?
ironbear - lol reading this stuff you would have thought the fights took place in 1920. Man now I feel old and Mario did tap.lolYeah exactly gary. Pretty funny, I was thinking the same. I loved the guys who said the were 250-0 (Pat Smith)
Mario Sperry, Thomas Ramirez, then proceed to lose their 1st televised fight also.
Naderhood- Iron Bear is Gary Myers on your Extreme Fighting Dvd
Respect.
DiscoNfrno -Well, in 94' I was still wearing pajamas with feet on them so yeah, it is like I found them in my grandpappy's attic, right next to VHS tapes and a pair of stone washed jeans.naderhood - I found a couple ol skool DVD's titled "Extreme Fighting". naderhood -it was called J-sect jiu jitsu i think....before lewis became a BJJ BB under andre pederneras he was one of the few Gene Lebell black belts (promoter john Peretti and extreme fighting ref john donahue being 2 of the others)evomma -Yeah, I meant unknown at the time Vs the well known Gracies. John Lewis was athletic as hell. Also was/is the inventor of Sect Jiu Jitsu? WTF is Sect Jiu Jitsu?naderhood - Its pretty funny watching this video. The production is shit and Mr T is the backstage interviewer but you cant hear any sound. You also can see the commentators talking as they look into the camera Rogan and Goldie style but their sound is silent as well.
I know we all complain about the crowds booing and being pretty retarded when it comes to watching fights, but these old crowds from the early events are absiolutely brutal. If a punch isnt thrown every 2 seconds they start booing. When Carlson Gracie Jr fights some unknown guy, the guy comes out with his hands wrapped and the ref cuts it off before he starts the fight and somebody in the crowd yells out "Cheater!". People start yelling stuff back and forth in the crowd and then some chick yells at the Gracies "Go back to Mexico!".....LOL gotta love them late 80's early 90's white trash bishes.
some unknown guy= John Lewis
i believe that Jsect was what Lewis was calling his mixed style of Lebell grappling and kickboxing
Sounds like it would be pretty sweet. A BJJ BB and a Gene Lebell BB in one dude would be pretty dang ol sweet. I'd love to have that pedigree.
Awesome thread.
Alrhough I do enjoy the UFC now I still love the old school ways. Much more realistic and you really do a see what would work in the street. As they kept adding rules it really didnt fair well for me. I dont think today you really see the greatest raw fighter out there, its almost so watered down that it makes it unrealistic.

I don't care that they got rid of headbutts and groin shots, but they REALLY need to bring back knees to the head of a downed opponent. (and soccer kicks) They are giving wrestlers too much of an advantage since there is no consequence for a stuffed takedown attempt.
But yes it's a whole lot less like streetfighting now. Having someone in your guard was a lot more dangerous when they could just headbutt the shit out of you.
I like both versions myself. I like todays game as its much more strategic. I also love the old style where it really was 2 different styles going at it. Boxer vs jiu jitsu guy, wrestler vs tae kwon do or whatever. Now everybody studies muay thai, boxing, jiu jitsu and wrestling. It all about who is slightly better at one of the arts. The older style was truer to actual fighting, the shit looked like any small town bar fight. 2 dudes straight brawlin.
Andy Anderson fought Jon Hess not Tank.
And what did he go to jail for?
Tank?
very tough to say
He tapped just once, Sperry didn’t complain.
You could tell he was done since he never tried to cinch on Igor while in guillotined half-guard after he checked for blood.
agreed he tapped I was very suprised He was winning the fight but couldnt finish Igor.Good fight
lol @ 272 n 0 I think that was his first fight,.He did go on to get some good wins after this including beat Igor V
yep that vovchanchin fight went exactly according to plan
Early NHB and records were amazing. Pat Smith was listed as something like 250-1 in kickboxing, Rickson and his 400-0, I believe early on Ken Shamrock was listed as 20+ shootfighting wins despite all but I believe 2 or 3 at the time being works. There was the one 400 lbs cab driver who was 200 and 0 or some crap.
Marketing?
Ramirez then got KOed by Don Frye first jab
