i guess that's all. i thought he was a lot worse than when i looked up his wiki and youtubed him. dude was a beast.
Just watch the PRIDE 2000 GP. And keep in mind that all that happened in ONE NIGHT
Actually, that happened on two separate nights.
................hey yo - Actually, that happened on two separate nights.FUUUUUUUUK. I feel bad for not knowing that. Thanks for the correction
Best victory celebration ever, IMO.
Those were the days.
Creepy looking guy sitting cageside to the left of colemans right knee
If they hadn't made headbutts illegal, coleman would still be the HW champ.
This happened to me once too.
World class wrestling, headbutts and knees to a grounded opponents head. Long rounds or no-time limit - there is a reason he wrecked shop. MMA is a vastly different animal now than it was then.
If Fujita would't have threw in the towel I bet Igor would've done much better. Mark had it easy that tourney.
Coleman was a damn BEAST back in the day. Very hard to deal with.
Cardio was his major weakness, followed by very, very basic striking.
But like others have pointed out, he was so freaking big and strong, wrestling that competitors had not come close to figureing out yet, and he was a smothering, controlling, relentless, head-butting, gnp master.
A nasty peice of work in early MMA history.
JohnnyB1 -
When he first came to the UFC and dominated everyone with his ground and pound he was THE man at that moment. He was one of the great UFC champions before he left to go to Pride. Let's not forget this.
He wasnt the Champ when he left the ufc. He lost the belt to Mo Smith and then was kicked into the moon by Pete Williams.
He is the first ultra-wrestler to enter the game. He was bigger, stronger, better athlete, better wrestler, and better supplemented fighter than anyone else in the ufc at the time. He was a beast.
Coleman was a beast period!
BC
I remember that it seemed like everyone was so high on Mark Kerr at the time of that tournament and no one was really giving Coleman much of a chance. Everything was about Sakuraba-Gracie and the predicted Vovchanchin-Kerr final in the tournament. It was pretty cool how Coleman just went in there, did what he did best, and won the whole thing.
He's a tough guy to place in the list of all-time great HWs because the era and type of fighters he fought were different than what we saw shortly after his peak. But I think it's a debate between being high on the list of great HWs and being VERY high on that list. Making it to the top of the two biggest orgs in MMA history is awfully impressive.
the most impressive thing about Coleman's career was that nobody took him down until the second Shogun fight

I didn't say he was the champ right when he left the UFC. I've been watching since UFC 1, don't try to school me. I seen this shit live as it was happening.
Breathe. Count to ten.
In all seriousness it's nice to have a Coleman thread. Nhb Coleman no can defend.

That was an asterisk tournament win if there ever was one.
