Matt Fury

What ever happened to the king of stretching.....

Usher hyped combat conditioning on some random vh1 show in the mid 2000’s. My jaw dropped. Never saw it again but I know what I saw.

It was one of those pop culture shows Paul scheer, Patrice O’Neil, Michael Ian black etc were all over at that time.

Theres no way fury negotiated him endorsing it, so I think he just randomly bought it and bought it and just happened to mention it when he was asked about his physique. He was kind of bragging like it was some badass workout and not squatting on your toes and neck bridging lol.

Who cares, dudes a thief.

Who? & What’s the story? It’s shitty day and I feel like a UG rabbit hole would be fun

Some fake wanna be catch dude who went and learned Karl Gotch’s conditioning regiment, then turned around and tried to make money off of it by making it his own system and selling it, but never gave Karl a dime or acknowledgement.

He’s on Instagram as “mattfureysays” hawking various bullshit martial arts techniques and other advice.

remember when he used his elderly mother-in-law as bait to aphrehend a mugger?

He went from CACC (ripping off Gotch), to Combat Conditioning (ripping off everyone by saying he got his physique from the exercises he took from Gotch, instead of admitting he got his physique by training with legendary strongman Brooks Kubik), to selling Chinese sex secrets (because he married a Chinese woman), to purchasing (I want to say Dan) Kennedy's self-help empire (I want to say it was called  Cybernetics or something simliar) and tried to transition into a self-help guru. I'm pleased to say he seems not to have succeeded.

UG member Joe Hurley has Furey story, iirc. When Joe ws a lowly blue belt, he armbarred him and Furey decided the best way to not look stupid was to suckerpunch his way out of it.

Two days ago I was looking for old baseball cards to give my nephew and I found Combat Conditioning (the book) and Wally Jay Small Circle Jiu Jitsu.  I threw them both out, not because they didn't have good info but because all of that shit is on YouTube or things I learned years ago at a more functional level.

He made a lot of money is what happened. Excellent college wrestler and wanted to cash in...on something. And he did.

Matt is a nut, a narcissist, possibly a sociopath, and a decent folk styIe wrestler. He also managed to make a good living doing something he loves, bunco and martial arts.

Matt lives in Wesley Chapel Fl, around 10 mins from my place.

I have nothing to do with the guy but have had his instructionals.

i remember it being it was a fury seminar, hurley choked fury in a roll and fury started giving him instructions to finish the choke, and still chrged him for the seminar

Fury supposedly had just got off the plane and went straight to rolling with joe. That's matt's version, anyway. It might have been at the grand opening of the new lions den

No prob.

Went to a seminar he was giving and was looking forward to rolling with him because I had heard a lot about his catch wrestling and extensive knowledge. So everything is going normal and when it comes time to roll with him, i’m thinking that he’s going to break out some serious “farmer burns” grappling moves. Also keep in mind that I was around 170 and i’m not sure what he weighed, but it was quite a bit more. He didn’t look like he did in the dinosaur training ads with his shirt off and buffed, but I know plenty of wrestlers that look pudgy, but can roll all day and grind you down so I didn’t think much of it.

So we go for a while. Maybe 15 to 20 minutes at the most, but from the start he seemed to get winded fast, was breathing heavy and turning red. As we roll i’m noticing a lot of little details that you don’t expect from a high level grappler to make like posting his hands on the mat a lot, not squaring up on my hips, etc. He had some strength, but not the “combat conditioning” you would expect and his technique was more of trying to use muscle and force than skill. As we’re going I start to realize he’s not all he was hyped up to be. I’m not trying to brag or talk shit because i’m no Rumina Sato or Mach Sakurai submission specialist, but with all the hype he put out about himself, I was not seeing it. I caught him with a couple of basic armbars from the guard that everyone learns in the first week and we end up stopping so he can move on to something else, but it seemed like he was exhausted and just wanted to quit. I never really felt that I was in danger or threatened with being subbed. Nice enough guy, but he was no catch master.

I heard an even better story of the time Tim Lacjik and Eugene Jackson went to a friend’s gym to roll with Matt and a student of his. Matt and his student show up and Eugene and Tim take turns rolling with the student and manhandling him. When it’s Matt’s turn to go, he says he has to get his mouthpiece from the car and never comes back. They finally realize that he drove off without telling anyone and left his student behind.

It’s a shame he never went into pro wrestling, he wouldn’t even need a working name, his birth name is a perfect pro wrestling moniker, and with his naturally abrasive personality , he wouldn’t have needed a gimmick. He could have just been himself and had the crowd screaming for his head.

That's so weird. For almost two decades now I was under the impression tha the punched Joe in the face. Also that he was a blue belt.
