need to fit my mouthguard

Presuming DentalNinja is an actual Dentist, I'd probably take his advice over TOWE's.

Well, I am...and thanks!

I should've done my mouth guard through Gladiator. I used StarGuards I think it is, and have been waiting for about 5 months now with no word.

what? i would be pissed. what if you ordered that for a fight or something like that. you would be screwed so when they send you your guard they should send your freakin money back too.

No matter what you do, don't wear an over-the-counter device as a protective measure at night...you will likely grind even more aggressively with a soft, compliant appliance and may actually damage your TM joints.

This is true. My dentist actually recommended an over the counter device as a way to save money. Years later, I started getting pain when chewing. Went to a jaw specialist and my TM joints are messed up. Rolling seems to aggravate it in certain postiions. So now I'm stuck drilling and hoping it heals up soon so I can get back to doing jiu-jitsu the way I want to. Maybe it would have been averted with a proper mouthguard.

My advice was to get a custom mouthguard, just like the "dentist" said.  Go back to posting on Kimbo threads or whatever it is you do.  K thanks!

You won't have the problem with Gladiator.  You should get your impression kit in like a week, send it back to them, and wait a few weeks for your new custom guard...  Not to mention the owner of Gladiator posts here on a regular basis, and a lot of of have his number if you ever had a problem or needed some questions answered.

Not sure if you are referring to me, but if so...thanks.

The main reason I decided to become a dentist was because I had problems similar to what macman1000 describes. I have intimate knowledge of the problems, underlying causes, and therapy available because of my personal situation.

TOWE--if you are in fact referring to me, maybe you can tell me what your profession is, and I can naively dismiss any advice you give in relation thereto. That is, if you have a REAL profession like, such as you quote, 'dentist'

I will give you the benefit of the doubt, however. There are a lot of dentists who profess competency in certain areas, whereas in fact they are only slightly more trained than the layman. This applies to medicine as well. Don't judge the entire profession from a singular experience, please. Thank you.

I was referring to you, not quite sure why you just got so defensive over the use of quotation marks when the post wasn't even directed to you (it was for 1armed scissor).

Let me get this straight, you don't recommend him getting a custom mouthguard instead of an over the counter mouthguard?  Because thats the only advice I ever gave to him.  And he DOESN'T need to go in and pay for an imression if the only thing he's trying to accompish is get his mouthguard.  If he wants to address the other problems he's having, then of course he needs to see a dentist.

And my profession has nothing to do with any of this, if I need any dental advice I ask Dr. Richard Towe, DDS (University of Louisville).  Thanks for your concern though...

Relax son.

Your advice was to use gladiator mouthgaurds.  Which while custom, you need to fit yourself.

The kind dentist here in this thread decsribed the OP's problem and that a 'mouthgaurd' isn't enough to solve his problem and that he needs what is called an 'occlusal orthotic' and that a dentist would have to fit it for him.  If the OP was a dentist he would be qualified to do this and wouldn't have started this thread.

My post simply said that if 'dentalNinja' was indeed a dentist then that would inherently make his advice much more worthwhile than yours.  Who knows maybe he's not a dentist.  I don't know and I don't care.   IF he is then his advice is again more worthwhile than yours in this matter.

Reading compreshension my dear TOWE, reading comprehension.

Jordan Watters -  boil it. be careful u could ruin it.

i already ruined it and threw it in the trash. i dont care what it says in the directions because you only get 1 shot to get it right when using a boil or your screwed. also their stupid because when your grabbing the guard out of the boiling water you put indents in the place you are grabbing it from. with that said, i had the Shockdoctor to fit properly, but my screwed up jaw structure and my back bite keeps knocking it loose. so i dont think the guard is as much as the problem as my teeth/jaw, but like i said, you still mess it up a little by grabbing it out of the water.

thanx though to all.

I'm sure that I can make macman a guard that will be abel to accommodate his occlusal issues. While I'm more of a Panky guy rather than a neuromuscular guy . I am familiar with this problem and while I cannot make you a night guard that will alleviate your TMJ issues I can make you a mouthguard that will be comfortable.

TOWE DID YOU JUST NAME DROP YOUR DAD?

Lol, carry on!

i still cant believe Icedog is about 5 minutes from my house and i have never used his product.

Tame Dog -  Not dissing Gladiator, but going to the dentist will be less than half the price, you have a professional take the impression for you, and you get it the next day.

But it's your money and time, not mine.

nah i appreciate any input in this situation and it has been very helpful so thanx to Towe, Dentalninja, misterw, Icedog, tamedog etc for the help.

Well, obviously we have our differences with regard to occlusion, but at least you have a general principle you adhere to. I salute you.
